New lights on at the railway station, Santa comes Dec. 19

No one could have missed the arrival of winter. Big Valley spent the weekend digging itself out after the winds and snow buried our sidewalks and streets in drifts.

No one could have missed the arrival of winter. Big Valley spent the weekend digging itself out after the winds and snow buried our sidewalks and streets in drifts. Though a regular occurrence in Alberta, we always seem a bit surprised by the first blizzard of the season.

Attendance at the hall board’s weekly Bingo was down a little, but it was a pretty cold night. Lorne Parkin was the caller for the evening. The progressive jackpot wasn’t won, with the consolation split between Brenda Woods, and Shirley Vols. The bonanza was won by Randel Welsh, the consolation split between Yvonne Burnstad, Randel Welsh, and Millie Woods. The loonie pot is at $15. Next Thursday, Dec. 10 will be the last Bingo for 2009. The first Bingo for 2010 will be on Jan. 7.

Christmas is in the air. The calendar is filled with special events and lights are being turned on all over the village. With much help, new lights have been put on the big spruce at the railway station. The Big Valley Beautification and Cultural Society would like to thank everyone who came out to help. Without our volunteers, projects like this could never take place.

Students of Big Valley School are busy rehearsing for the annual Christmas concert which is being held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17 at the Jubilee Hall. Donations for the food bank will be collected at the door. Families are asked to bring a snack to share after the evening’s performance. Coffee and juice will be provided.

This year, the school will once again be holding – the “Festival of Trees”. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year. Each class will be decorating a Christmas tree with a special theme. The trees will then be auctioned off at the concert. Funds raised go to school activities and equipment. If you are unable to transport your tree home, it can be delivered to you the next day.

Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy what always proves to be fun and entertaining evening.

Hope to see you there.
