New ideas for 2010 STARS Ride, countdown to quilting days on

Fog, fog, fog. How does the saying go? There will be rain ninety days following days of fog. We should have a nice wet spring then.

In curling circles, the men from the district were curling this week in the men’s bonspiel there. Last week when the men’s ‘spiel was on in Rumsey, the ladies were curling in the ladies ‘spiel in Elnora. Haven’t heard how either team did.

Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 9, the ladies’ bonspiel will start in Rumsey as they have 16 rinks registered. The concession is open each night for steak supper etc. and on Thursday, Feb. 11, the oyster supper will be served at the rink. Saturday, Feb. 13 will be the windup for the ladies and the banquet will be held that night. This supper is open to the public and believe me, it’s worth attending. The food is really good.

Sunday, Jan. 31, the STARS committee of the Rumsey Ag. Society met to begin the organization of the 2010 Ride for STARS in August. Sunday, Aug. 8 is the date set for this year. Due to the number of members absent that night, no plans could be finalized, but heavy conversation brought forth some new ideas. The next meeting will be held Sunday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Agri-plex. Everyone is welcome to attend and be a part of this year’s fundraiser for STARS. The 2009 ride was the 20th year for this event and now things are about to change as to format of the day. The ride itself will remain the same but other ideas have surfaced for the other activities of the day. The poker rally will remain the same.

Sunday Feb. 7, church services were held in the Morrin United Church with Rev. Mervyn and Marilyn Penfound leading the service. Following the service, lunch was enjoyed by all who could stay, Sunday, Feb. 21, will be the date of the annual meeting which will be held following the lunch, which follows the service.

With February well on its way, the Morrin Figure Skating Club is planning their presentation “2010 Olympics” on Sunday, March 7 at 2 p.m. in the Morrin arena. The show begins at 2 pm. To add to the fun of the afternoon, there will be a raffle table.

While reading the history book, it came to light that Chris Jensen celebrated his 80th birthday last December. He kept it pretty quiet as far as I know.

It seems the older we get, the older our friends get also. Funny, huh.

Monday, Feb. 22 is the date of the February birthday party at St. Mary’s Health Care Center in Trochu. Plan to come and visit for a while, Marion Stiekle and her group of musicians from Three Hills will be on hand to entertain with music.

It is my turn to be the hostess, so, please consider coming out to help.

Quilting days in March at the Rumsey Drop-in are set for Monday and Tuesday, March 22 and 23. Bring a sandwich and plan to stay for the day. Some years, while quilting, depending on the amount of helpers, we have finished up approximately 20 quilts to share with those folks who may not have any. Some of the quilts this year are destined for the Ronald McDonald House in Red Deer when it gets up and running. The irony is that we started making these quilts when Ronald McDonald House in Calgary was just getting under way.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all. Don’t forget your sweetie on Feb. 14. There are several folks I know who celebrate their birthdays in February. So, happy birthday also.
