The Botha School would like to welcome Mrs. Melnyk back to our school now, as she has returned and everyone is very happy about her returning. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Friday Morning Mrs. Melnyk will be teaching the Grade 5s and 6s English, Language Arts, Social Studies as well as Art and Music. This frees Mr. Mike Flieger to help more students to catch up in Math and ELA to the younger students, and wherever else he is needed.

Dates are being set up for skating and also ski days in Alliance and those dates will be sent home shortly with your student, so please keep a eye open for these.

Family Literacy Day will be held on the 26, so please keep this in mind. Also hockey day will be announced later. This day takes place once a year, usually around the middle of February, so also keep your eyes open for this.

The students are also kept busy at recesses thanks to the Student Wellness Committee and Mrs. Maxwell, with organized structured activities.

Towards the end of this month, all parents from Grade 4-6 will be receiving some mail from the Department of Education which will be a annual accountability survey, so please fill these out as soon as possible and send them back, thank you, this is very much appreciated.

On January 23, is the first school council meeting at the library for this year starting at 7 p.m. All parents are invited to attend. This meeting will be based on the annual education plan, as well as the hockey day in Botha, so please attend if possible.

The Botha School Society is a new society seeking to fundraise, and very pleased to announce that so far this school year have already raised $1,786.00 from the bake sales, live auctions, selling cookbooks, raffles tickets, and donations at the Christmas concert. Thank you goes out to everyone that has supported this great cause so far this year. The next fundraiser will be on Valentines Day when “Jim the Janitor” who is a comedian will be coming to Botha. He is great, so make sure you purchase your tickets quickly and it’s be a great place to take your sweetheart to for Valentines Day. Adults only please.

The new Challenge for January will be the Hand Cranked or Hydraulic Crane. This is a fun challenge for all students and parents to get involved in. If you need some material for this project please contact the school and they can help you out with some great ideas and materials. Unfortunately there are no prizes given out for any of these challenges, but it makes a great project to do and a great way to use your imaginations and to work together as a family. The rules are they must have a crank or hydraulic system, no electronics of any kind allowed. The crane does not have to have wheels or tracks to move. Te crane however has to lift 500kg (about 1/2 lb) about four inches off the floor without tipping or being held by hand. So please use your imagination, and the staff is anxious to see all the adventures due in by 9 a.m. on January 26, no later, so have fun. The school number is 403-742-5187, if you would like some help on any of these.

Also don’t forget to head to the Hub this coming Saturday 20, to help celebrate Robbie Burns day starting at 6 p.m. with cocktails, supper is at 7 p.m.Tickets are available at Wells Furniture or through Teresa Fisher at 403-742-4057 and/or 403-740-5556 (cell) or at the door that evening. Hope to see everyone out for this celebration.
