Mrs. Schlarbaum’s cosmetology students, along with a few drama students had a theatrical makeup artist come to the school on Monday, May 10 for an in-service. The artist, Herman Groenewald, is an internationally qualified makeup artist with over thirty years of experience. Many of his students have gone on to various aspects of makeup artistry, and one of his graduates is an Academy Award winning makeup artist in Hollywood. Herman is here in Stettler to raise funds for Dibanani AIDS Project in Cape town South Africa.

Ms. Konschuh’s Social 10-2 class has started a project called “How to be an everyday philanthropist”. This project requires students to set up good deeds and volunteer projects in the community. Students are spending their double blocks every Tuesday in May participating in the activities that they have organized. Some students are helping out in the Stettler Elementary School, some are cleaning up around the community, and some have volunteered to walk dogs for their neighbors. One student is going to be playing his guitar in downtown Stettler to brighten people’s day while other students are baking cookies and handing them out randomly in the random acts of kindness spirit.

On Tuesday, May 11, Leanna from Big Brothers and Big Sisters stopped by Wm. E. Hay to talk to our students about the mentorship program. On Thursday, May 13, Rob Spencer from the Heartland Beautification Committee will be here to let our students know what his organization is all about. These presentations are occurring as part of “Volunteer Presentations” throughout the month of May. This is a way to raise awareness of local community organizations and how students at Wm. E. Hay can get involved in the community.

On Wednesday, May 19 Theatre Arts presents “An Evening of One-Act Plays”. There will be three student-directed shows presented, including our award winning festival piece, “The Brute” by Anton Chekhov.

On June 4, Theatre Arts students will be travelling to Calgary to attend an advanced improvisation workshop at the world famous Loose Moose Theatre, later that evening the students will be attending a performance of the new hit musical, “Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”.

That’s it for this week. Stay tuned next week for more news from Wm. E. Hay.
