Major Elks event brings together 55 members

Big Valley Bulletin

The action at the Big Valley Bust Out Rodeo this past weekend proved to be great fun. Talented cowboys and cowgirls from across Western Canada came here to compete in a full slate of events to the delight of a packed arena. Dedicated to the memories of Jerry Skocdopole and Jack Webster, the rodeo was once again a huge success and a fine start to this year’s rodeo season. The Big Valley Rodeo Association would like to thank all the sponsors, committee members and volunteers, in and out of the arena, for all their hard work.

On April 5, the Elks held their annual Past Exalted Rulers Night. This event honours the Elks’ past ERs (presidents) and provides new members with the opportunity to know and meet some of the leaders from previous years. This year Brother Chuck Houston took over the reins and very capably ran the meeting. Approximately 55 members and Brother Elks from Hanna, Delburne and Stettler attended the meeting. Afterwards, the annual oyster feed took place, with the Royal Purple ladies assisting Bill with the preparations.

Initiations were carried out and the Hanna Patrol Team, once again, did a fine job. Brother Lloyd Duncan led the Big Valley Degree Team in the ceremony.

The Elks would like to welcome Brother Bob Boswell, who is now a member of the Big Valley Elks. Club 200 draws are complete and members will now have the new series for sale. The Club Draw was won by Brother Bob Nelson who donated the proceeds to the refreshment bar. The final Club 200 Draw winners for this season are: Marg Levesque, Mr. Guard, Eric Elines and the $500 winner was Taylor Elines. A fine start to little Taylor’s education fund! Congratulations to all the winners of this past year and thank you all for your support.

There will be no service at the Big Valley United Church on Sunday, April 17. Instead, the spring supper and silent auction will take place at the Big Valley Community Hall.

The Good Friday service will be at the Botha United Church on Friday, April 22 at 7 p.m. with the Erskine United Church Choir singing. The regular service time in Big Valley is 7 p.m. on Sundays until the end of June, (this includes the Easter Sunday Service on April 24).

10 players came out for crib at the drop-in centre on Sunday, April 10, including new players Connie and Ed Whiteside. 1st went to Ron Milton, 2nd to Connie Whiteside and 3rd to Edna Sugden with the booby going to Vandy Koshure.

At the Big Valley Inn, nine players were out for the afternoon. 1st went to Len Shaw, 2nd to Bob Authenac, 3rd to Phil D’Aoust and the booby went to Caroline Pound. This week’s lucky draw winner was Bill Kirtley. Don’t forget, next week is the season’s finale.
