Lots of dates to remember

RUMSEY RECORD

The news this week is mostly upcoming events as I guess this week was quiet in the district. The weather was way too cold to be out and about any more than was necessary.

The weekend, Friday and Saturday were busy curling days as the local curling club host a mixed doubles bonspiel. This is when there are just two curlers on a team. Most of the teams were made up of moms and dads, aunts and uncles, friends with friends and most of the team had young curlers with them.

There were 26 teams that came from Drumheller, Olds, Big Valley and Rumsey, so it was a great time. Everyone enjoyed supper Saturday night before the presentations of prizes to the winners.

Winning the first event was Dereck Krywcun and his sweetheart Clare Swanson, second place was Shellby Primrose and her partner, her Dad Tim. Third place in the first event was Rod Nelson and his daughter Ernica.

Second event saw Peggy Freeman and her son-in- law, Steve from Olds, winning; second place was Mitch Martin and Cheryl Richen from Drumheller. Third place was Eric and Scott Westman, also from Drumheller. Fourth place went to Jackie Watts and her son Brighton.

Third event winners were; Dawn Herd and her neighbour Travis Cawiezel, second place was Leah Watts and her Dad Clarke, third place was a brother and sister team of Wade and Jana Kiemele. Fourth place were friends Brooks Watts and Brittany Cawiezel.

Many of these junior curlers are from the junior curling club in Rumsey which has been going all winter, once a week. Monday and Tuesday, Feb 28-March 1 is the Rumsey junior bonspiel.

The dates of the 2011 mixed bonspiel in Rumsey is March 7-12, with the oyster supper on Thursday night of that week and the banquet and presentations of prizes on Saturday, the last day. Phone entries to David Sengaus 368-2457.

Monday and Tuesday, March 14-15 are the days of the annual quilting in the Rumsey Drop-in Center. Plan to come and join in the fun and fellowship.

Sunday, March 6, will be the next church service in the Morrin United Church with Rev. Mervyn and Marilyn Penfound of Stettler taking the service.

Due to bad weather and road conditions, there has been no church there since the Dec. 19. That gives you some indication of what kind of a winter we’ve had.

Some folks in the area have been away to warmer climates for a while but to return to such cold weather is not fun either.

Remember, after the mixed bonspiel, the curling club plan to do some housecleaning in the hall and curling rink to get ready for the summers activities so if you have any pans or pots there, please retrieve them or they are destined to go to the good will.

Sympathy wishes to family and friends of Betty Ferris, who passed away recently. Her funeral services were held in Stettler, Saturday, Feb. 26. Betty’s mom was Peggy Cook and was the daughter of Tom Sinclair of this area. The Cooks also lived here during the time when their children were small. She was a cousin to Elsie Deering and a second cousin to Robert Sinclair.

Sympathy wishes also to Jean and Eric Primrose as her cousin passed away in Edmonton and his funeral service was held in the city this week. Jean was able to attend thanks to the kindness of her daughter-in-law Betty who drove her to the city.

The Morrin Lions Club are hosting a casino fun night April 9, in the Morrin Community Hall. Sounds like a fun night to attend.

Sunday March 6 is the date of the Morrin Figure Skating club’s presentation, “A Night at the Movies”, beginning at 2 p.m. in the Morrin arena.

This is always such a nice afternoon and interesting to see the improvements in all the skaters from one year to the next.

Another date you may want to remember is Monday, June 6 when the annual 4-H Show and Sale will be held in Delia. The Rumsey club is the host club this year.

The date of the Rumsey Ag Society’s Spring Fling is Saturday, April 16, taking place at the Rumsey Community Hall.

Again, a reminder about the scoreboard auction at the curling rink following the mixed bonspiel presentation of prizes. For more information, get in touch with one of the following; Carol Wilkins, 403-368-3750, Dereck Krywcun, 403-368-2147, or Michelle McNaughton, 403-368-2231.

For all you ‘bull buyers’ remember there are two bull sales coming up right here in the district this month.
