Local travelers touched by Chile “shakings”, but they are safe

I am happy to report that Dave Thomas and daughter Susan are safe and have e-mailed Hazel.

I am happy to report that Dave Thomas and daughter Susan are safe and have e-mailed Hazel. Dave and Susan were several hundred miles south of Santiago, Chile at the time of the devastating 8.8 earthquake on Friday. They felt two severe “shakings” that each lasted 20 seconds and shook and rattled everything where they were staying. As I write this, there are still close to 250 Canadians unaccounted for. Dave and Susan are on a hiking experience of a lifetime and are in the windy mountains of Chile where they hope to continue their trek.

Congratulations to Brent and Marcie Butterfield on the birth of their baby boy Owen on Feb. 19 in the Camrose hospital. Grandparents are Connie and Bob Rajewski, great-grandparents, Charlie and Aleta Cassidy of the Westwoods area.

Happy birthday to Frank Dahlgren, whose birthday was Saturday. The day started with Darcy, Tammy, Kayla and Luke bringing dinner out to the farm. Lasagne and birthday cake (made from scratch!). Bill and Joyce Hansel came for coffee. Dwayne, Bonnie, Christina and Mike Glazier came for supper, bringing Chinese Food and another birthday cake. We know the way to Frank’s heart!

Some highlights from last week:

Velvet Nickerson, Haley and Cooper and Sandra Rowland enjoyed a relaxing week in Sherwood Park. Then Haley and Cooper headed to Calgary to spend Valentine’s weekend with Cooper’s “City Grandma” and dad.

On Feb. 14, family weekend, Frank and Eleanor Dahlgren hosted a turkey supper for daughter Bonnie and Dwayne, Kristina and Richard (who was home from the University of Alberta for the weekend), to help celebrate Bonnie’s birthday. Happy birthday Bonnie!

Sunday, Feb. 21 Frank and Eleanor attended the 90th birthday party in honour of Orville Strandquist. This was held in the Stettler Hospital Complex Atrium with friends and family gathered. Cake and coffee was served by the family.

Sincere sympathies to Dave Easton and family on the passing of May Easton. Dave and May were active members of the Westwoods Community Centre and the Agriplex at Westwoods, working hard to help in any way they could. Dave and May received a plaque of appreciation a few years ago and were made honorary lifetime members. Dave and May moved to Stettler two years ago due to May’s failing health. There will be a private memorial for May at a later date. She was 84 years of age.

Back to the present and congratulations to Lee and Rhonda Robinson on the birth of their baby boy, Kesler on Feb. 21. Grandparents are Robert and Gwen Robinson. Great-grandparents are Charlie and Aleta Cassidy and Phyllis Robinson. Curtis and Cody Cassidy are doing well in the U.S.A. on the rodeo circuit.

Fifteen would-be winners came to Bingo last Saturday night at the bank building. The loonie pot was not won and continues to grow. Get well wishes to Ray Stevenson. Laura and Ray are home and have put their trucking behind them for the time being. It is good to have them home.
