HALKIRK HERALD -- Hoar frost makes the countryside beautiful as it clings to the trees. But it's not so nice when it clings to the overhead power lines. Halkirk, the town and country, have been among the many communities experiencing several hours of power outages this past week.

Our thanks to the very busy ATCO employees who hung the Village Christmas decorations on Thursday, Dec. 24. Now we are all ready to join the Elks at their annual "Breakfast with Santa" happening on Dec. 4 at the Community Hall from 9 to 11 a.m. Santa will be arriving at about 10 a.m. and will have goodie bags for all the children. Please bring a food item or new toy suitable for the Castor Food Bank.

Our sympathy to Ralph and Roselyn Garnet on the passing of Roselyn's dad, Grandpa B, on Saturday, Nov. 19. Roselyn's parents have been part of this community for the past few months. The Garnets live on the former Paul and Rosemary Fetaz farm.

Word has been received on the passing of Kay Nish. Kay and his wife Fran and their two children, Marci and Ron, came to Halkirk in 1971 and Kay taught here for several years.

Our local councillors have been been away at various conventions this fall. Village councillors Sherry Jamieson and Matt Koenraadt attended the AUMA convention, Rocky Dahmer, Doreen Blumhagen and Dale Kent were delegates from the County of Paintearth at the AAMDC convention and Rose Koenraadt was at the FCSS convention.

Three of the four living daughters of Rasmus and Josephine Petersen recently visited the original farmstead, where the large old house still stands. The farm is located east of Hwy 855 on the new 601 and is now farmed by Shannon and Doreen Blumhagen. Visiting was Mary, 92, and her daughter Betty from Calgary; Norma, 88, from Calgary and her daughter, Odette who organized the reunion, from Toronto; Rose, 77, her daughter Carey and granddaughter from Edmonton. The other sister lives in B.C. and was unable to attend. Rasmus and Josephine were parents to 13 children who attended the Apremont school. They sold their farm in 1963 and retired to Castor until 1978 when they moved to Calgary. Dennis and Doris Cordel and the Blumhagens showed them their old home and around the property. The ladies and the Cordels also enjoyed lunch and a tour of Castor.
