Exciting plans are under way for this year’s Summer Reading Club. Our summer students, Maddie and Sydney, will be adding their own personal flair to this year’s SRC theme of Around the World, sparking ventures that will inspire the fun and discovery of travel and other cultures.

Watch this column, our Facebook page, or our website for news and upcoming events, and don’t forget to sign up children ages 5-18 in this free summer-long program. Keep a tally of your minutes spent reading while school is out and enter to win some of our spectacular prizes.

You may be too old to take part in our children’s programs but no one is too old to spend time reading. You can knock out your To Be Read pile with the help of our library. We can order whatever you’re looking for through our Central Alberta system, from farther afield across Canada, or even from academic libraries, all at no charge to you. If you don’t have a library card, sign up for one today. Memberships are free to residents of Stettler town or county.

Children:

Something Cool After School (Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 p.m.) are hitting both sides of the spectrum of fun over the next while. Get ready for Volcano Slime on May 22 and then come back on May 27 to watch popsicle sticks explode!

And for a change from explosions and eruptions, join us as we make imitation stain glass art on May 29. Ages 6 and up.

For parents and tots (0-5 years) Read & Rhyme is a fun morning of stories, songs, and activities that foster language development. We meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:30.

Ask the staff about our program 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and we’ll reward you and your child with a small prize for each 100 books you read enjoy together.

Teens & ’Tweens:

Join us for tea, cookies, and chatting about all things books on May 28 at 4:30 p.m. Ages 10+.

Youth aged 13 and up are welcome to join the fun at Teen Games Night on May 28 at 5:30 p.m. We’ll have fun with Jackbox, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and more, not to mention snacks and drinks.

Does your imagination ever get you in trouble? Put it to good use for adventure and entertainment at Dungeons & Dragons Night when we strategize and tell stories each Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Ages 13 +. There will be snacks to fuel your quest!

Adults:

Create some beautiful, hardy blooms out of plastic bottles at Crystal’s Crafters on May 22 at 6:30 p.m. Pre-register by calling the library.

If growing words into sentences, into paragraphs and, ultimately, into books is your vibe, check out the Stettler Writers’ Club on May 29 at 6:30 p.m. We spur each other on to greater creativity and clarity, so bring a writing utensil and your imagination and be prepared to give and receive helpful feedback.

Tweak your resume to get it ready for your job search with expert help and advice from our employment resource volunteer. Call for a personal consultation, available Thursdays from 1-3 p.m.

Life can be a roller-coaster of uncertainty with someone who drinks too much. If that describes you, Al-Anon meetings can help. Join us for support and coping strategies on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.

Afternoon Friends is a group of adults who enjoy crafts, movies, and games at a low-kay pace each Tuesday at 1 p.m. On May 27, we’ll have fun watching a movie. Don’t worry, there will be popcorn!

Join Reader’s Circle on May 28 at 6:30 p.m. for a lively discussion of Fredrik Backman’s Anxious People, in which a whimsical plot serves up unforgettable insights into the human condition.

Minds in Motion is a program developed the Alzheimer Society designed to enhance memory and brain function for those experiencing cognitive decline using exercise, socializing, and games. Join us Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Caregivers are welcome, too.

All Ages:

It may be too chilly for lake swimming, but the Rec Centre makes a great outing for the family. Get in on the fun for free with one of our circulating weekly Family Passes for access to the Rec Centre gym and pool. Call to get your name on the wait list.
