Stettler Elementary School was a hub of activity last week, as classrooms became real life demonstration labs as our school embarks upon a new teaching and learning strategy. Several classrooms were invaded by the entire staff as they observed the process of Smart Learning in action.

This method will be an initiative for our school for the upcoming school year, as we continue to implement exciting and innovative ways of learning for our students. This learning process seeks to involve all level of learners in reading and writing activities, and implements an in depth thought process, such as talking to peers, sharing ideas, problem solving, working with words, and analyzing images before any reading or writing takes place. It is a creative process which, we hope, will be engaging for all of our students, and we look forward to exploring this for the remainder of this year, and into next year as well.

Kindergarten students invited their moms to school in celebration of their annual Mother’s day tea which was held this past Friday, May 14. The room was decorated with placemats that the children had made in class, and tulip centerpieces provided by Panda Flowers. The children sang some very special songs and shared some poems with their moms. Their performance also included some dances, which they later taught their moms. The children and their mothers made a craft together and had doughnuts and iced tea.

It was a very memorable occasion for the kindergarten kids and their Moms.

Since 1985, the Classroom Agriculture Program, CAP, has taught Alberta grade 4 students the importance of agriculture in their daily lives.

Recently, Mr. Jay Byer from the County of Stettler donated an hour of his time to each of the four Stettler Elementary School grade 4 rooms enabling enthused students to talk and learn about agriculture. Through interactive activities and videos, students learned about the food we eat and where it comes from in Alberta. Students especially enjoyed tasting various grains and the end products. They also learned about how farmers care for their animals and how they protect their crops and livestock from pests.

CAP is an initiative supported by many Alberta commodity commissions and producers. Stettler Elementary School teachers and students wish to thank the many generous sponsors and Mr. Byer for his very informative and fun program.
