Kids are doing well at basketball

Mother Teresa Jr. High students enjoyed a two-day ski trip to Lake Louise last week. Teacher Mike Courtney and parents Nathan Neufeld, Cynthia Perry and Tara Schilling accompanied the group.

On Saturday, the Jr. high basketball teams competed at the CARA tournament in Stettler. Both teams played well with the girls bringing home the silver in the final game against Theresetta .The boys placed fifth. Sheldon Grice and Kevin Perry coach both teams.

Congratulations to the Gus Wetter Tigers girls’ senior basketball team who won the gold medal at the Alberta northeast league with a win over Provost. They will compete at zones in the middle of March. Six of the girls on the team, Katelyn Dahmer, Jacey and Tiana Gamroth, Haley Grice, Madelyn Schauer and Jillian Schaffner are from Halkirk. Maxine Baird and Deb Hronek are the coaches.

We also send congrats to the Gus Wetter boys team who won the silver, losing a close game against Coronation. Five of their players, Liam Grice, MacQuire Kent, Simon Muncy, Lief and Seth Neufeld are from Halkirk. Bruce Downey is the coach.

Eleven members from the Valley Ski club participated in ski cross races at Lake Louise last weekend. Local skiers are Jacey and Tiana Gamroth and Hannah Jackson. Congratulations to Tiana, who brought home a bronze medal. The girls have been doing their practices runs at Sunridge in Edmonton.

Tiana and Kiara Gamroth are ski racing in the regional series this winter competing in Edmonton and Red Deer with the finals in Jasper on March 14 and 15.

Congratulations to Ian Land and Deann on the birth of their daughter in Stettler, Kenzington May 6lbs 2oz. Local grandparents are Sharon and Elliot Land.

Dale Berry from Saskatoon has returned home having spent part of the winter with daughters Ellyn Schaffner and Christie Ruddell and their families.

Don’t forget to “spring forward” this Sunday early morning. It’s also the day to change the batteries in your smoke detector.
