Junior high on spring ski trip to mountains

On Thursday, the students of Mother Teresa Catholic School held a successful cookie bingo as a fundraiser for their Spring ski trips. On Sunday, the junior high students and several parent chaperones left for the mountains. They will ski at Lake Louise on Monday and at Nakiska on Tuesday.

The Grade 5 and 6 students have completed their DARE course taught by Const. Val Dennis of Coronation. Graduation ceremonies were held on Thursday. Well done, students.

On Thursday, bus drivers Melody Kent, Darcy Mabbott and Connie Turre were presented with a certificate of appreciation and a thermo coffee mug by the school students and teachers.

The girls basketball team entered in the CARA playoffs in Stettler on Saturday. They were awarded a lovely trophy for 1st place in the B pool. Eric Neilson and Sheldon Grice are the coaches. Congratulations.

Sympathy of the community is extended to Barbara Schilling and her family and to Gordon (Tic) Walker and family on the passing of Yvonne last week. Services were held on Monday Mar.7 at the Lions hall in Bowden.

Glenna Doan, widow of Farrell Doan, passed away in Edmonton on Feb. 28 at 96 years of age. She is a sister-in-law to May and Bill Jamieson.

Congratulations to JD Johnson, Rocky and Ryan Dahmer and Kurt Chick, who won the men’s open bonspiel in Castor last week.

Curling in Byemoor this week were Tony and Luke Nibourg and Rocky and Ryan Dalmer, who placed second in the A event. Lee Fowler, Scott Koenraadt, Luke Rausch and Warren Schulmeister were also curling in the spiel. On the ladies’ side Sandra Johnson, Lorna Schilling, Sheryl Bunbury and Clara Nibourg came home with 1st place victory in the B event.

Congratulations to Wanda Turner, who was honored at a retirement party in Drumheller after 32 years of service with ATCO in Castor and Drumheller. Wanda is the eldest daughter of Jean and the late Ed Anderson and was raised in Halkirk. Able to attend the gathering were her sons Craig and Trina from Edmonton and Scott and Renee from Drumheller and their families, mom, Jean Anderson from Stettler and siblings Wes, Vicky and Kyle of Red Deer, Lorna, Ron and family of Irricana and nephew Daryl and Wendy Turner from Red Deer. Unfortunately several guests were unable to attend because of poor weather and road conditions.

Tony and Clara Nibourg, Jenna and Luke recently returned from the hot and sunny weather in Costa Rica. They met up with Jenna’s school friend Bastian, who was an Ashbacker exchange student from Germany and he spent three days with them. There are lots of beaches, jungle and mountains and they had a wonderful holiday.
