Halkirkites enjoy busy start to summer

As part of the 75th anniversary of the Ponoka Stampede several former champions were recognized. Among them was the Doan family. Representing the family at a supper were Doan and Sherry Jamieson, Melva and Ron Mabbott, Phil and Jane Doan, Patsy and Bob Hocking, Donna Thulien and Ron and Shirley Lindsey. Many of our residents attended the stampede this week. Local chuckwagon driver Layne McGillivray was among the competitors.

Special birthday greetings go out to Tina Rowland who celebrated her 40th birthday on July 1 with a gathering of family and friends at a party at Gull Lake.

Congratulations to Tiara Hronek and Doug Janke who were married on July 2 in a beautiful outdoor ceremony at Rochon Sands on Buffalo Lake. Festivities followed in the hall at Rochon hall. The newlyweds will make their home in Erskine.

The Village has a new resident with the arrival Alexandra Joy-anne Oickle , an 8 lb 12 oz baby girl born to Will and Crystal on June 23 in Daysland hospital. Alexandra has siblings Dakoda and Jack at home.

Darcy Mabbott organized a family fun night at the rodeo grounds on Wednesday for young riders interested in barrel racing, pole bending exercises etc. Plans are underway to continue this activity every two weeks.

Max Schaffner is the Village STEP student working during July and August with Doan Jamieson.

Author Killarney “Kelli” Sheffield launched her first historical romance novel, Guilty Kisses, in June and her book trailer was a first place winner on the yougottaread blogspot. Congratulations.

The Schauer family; Shawna Jenkins and her young son as well as Rae-anne Cordel were among the local families competing at the Wade Buchwitz memorial gymkana in Endiang on July 1.

For the local pyrotechnics Ross Elsasser along with helpers, Bryon and Jerome, and Dennis Cordel, with the help of Doris, Adrian and Rae-anne did the fireworks at Stettler and Endiang, respectively, on July 1 weekend.

Noel and Shirley McBride held their annual open house at Sheep Meadow Farms on the June 25 weekend. Their son Michael and his wife Melissa who have been working in Buenos Aires, Argentina were able to attend as they are in the process of relocating to Miami, Fl.

Kourtney Hronek completed her first year at Augustana University in Camrose and is employed at the Paintearth mine for the summer.

Luke Nibourg donates an item to a Stollery Children’s hospital fundraiser every year. This year he donated an hour of entertainment by Paper Bag Skirt. Marianne Baltimore bought it and the band performed at a Canada Day celebration at Rochon Sands – great way to celebrate Canada’s 144 birthday.

Keith and Abbi Muncy and family of Midland, Texas are visiting with Keith’s mom, Kathy and family. They will join Ron and Deirdre; Charles and Bernita, Simon and Jonathan; Rhonda; Troy, Dianna and Hayley for their annual family campout, held this year in Plamondon during the long weekend.

Shane and Andrea Doan and family of Phoenix, Ariz. spent a week with Shane’s parents at the farm. They were joined by Chad and Leighann Reimer and family of Three Hills and Brook and Nicole Doan of Stettler.

Wally and Linda Lehman returned last Sunday having spent two weeks holiday in Ottawa, and Blue Sea Lake in Quebec with Wally’s family.

Ross and Sheryl Bunbury and their family attended the Bunbury (children of Bob and Dortha) family reunion held at Garden Plains at the weekend. It was a great weekend for visiting, games and even fireworks.

Doan and Sherry Jamieson along with Cliff and Karen Jordahl were in Okotoks at the weekend watching their granddaughters Sydney and Morgyn play ball. They are Lisa and Doug’s girls.
