Halkirk residents recognized at Canadian Finals Rodeo

Santa coming to town on Dec. 3rd

The Canadian Final Rodeo (CFR) held its 44th and final rodeo at the Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton from Nov. 8 – 12. Halkirk residents have long been supporters of the CFR and so it’s not surprising that several were recognized by the association.

Bob and Maxine Baird were among those honoured. Maxine has been chosen by the cowboys to serve as a timer for 29 years and Bob has worked at the rodeo, from behind the scenes, for the full 44 years. Each was presented with a back number (pictured) on Sunday afternoon. On Friday, their bull “ Brahma Boots Chrome” won a buckle (pictured) for best bull of the day. This Brahma bull “Chrome” will be among three bulls that the Outlaw Buckers (Baird and Co.) will be sending to the NFR held in Las Vegas the first part of December.

Doug and Virginia Duke were also honoured at the CFR. They have purchased the sixpack of tickets for a long time – at least 40 of the 44 years. The association presented them with a gift certificate for their continued support and they were introduced and featured on the Jumbo-tron.

Phil Doan was invited back, as were all the winners from the past 44 years. Phil was the All Round cowboy buckle winner at the first rodeo held at the Coliseum in 1974. He had the opportunity to meet up with the 2017 all round champion Ky Marshall from Bowden to compare their buckles.

Rose Koenraadt was in Edmonton last week to attend the FCSS convention. Rose represents the village as a board member on the Castor & District FCSS.

It looks like the snow and the cold weather are here to stay. So bundle up and enjoy.

The next big event in Halkirk is the Elks annual pancakes with all the trimmings “Breakfast with Santa” at the Hall on Sunday, Dec. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. Santa and his helpers will be handing out treats to all the young ones, so be sure to come and join the fun. Oh and don’t forget your camera.
