The Elks annual bull-a-rama celebrated its 19th weekend of rain free weather with a very large crowd on hand to enjoy the lineup of fun activities.

The Ladies of the Heartland performed the opening ceremonies. Only one rider is local. Katelyn Dahmer took Rae-Anne Cordel’s place this year. O Canada was sung by Brooklyn Perry.

There were lots of entrees in the mutton busting for age six and under; for the wild pony races by the seven to 14 year olds and for the ladies goat dressing, where the contestants had to put a shirt, shorts and socks on the goats. Several locals did well in these categories, which are favourites with spectators.

The younger patrons were entertained by face painting, a money pit and shoe races. They were assisted by our local clown, Johnny D and his girlfriend, Sandi, who provided a laugh for young and old.

The food booth, operated by the seniors, sold over 50 dozen burgers plus hot dogs and fries which were a big hit.

Capital Power had a booth on the grounds, handing out water bottles and goodie bags, as did Today’s Sweet who sold cupcakes.

Les McIntire was the announcer with DJ Terry Howe as the sound man.

Ross Kreutzer was the trophy saddle winner as the cowboy with the high points of the day. Stock is provided by Bob Baird and Rod Shellenberg.

Dallas Lang was the 50-50 winner.

The beer gardens and dancing to the music by DJ Matt Hill are always a big hit and the fireworks were spectacular with several new displays, thanks to Ross Elsasser.

Several visitors took advantage of the camping facilities.

Another excellent show in the history books thanks to the many volunteers in our little community. A job well done!

The ice bucket challenge has hit Halkirk as we educate ourselves about ALS ( Lou Gehrig’s disease) and donate towards research and a cure.

Kurt and Erin Chick and Hunter returned Friday from a 10-day stay in PEI, where they attended the wedding of Erin’s sister Beth to Kyle Gallant on Aug. 15 at New Glasgow. Erin’s parents, Alvin and Carrie Kuefler from Stettler plus some extended family and friends also attended. They stayed in Charlottetown, enjoying the friendly people and the relaxed atmosphere of the Island. They toured the countryside and got in a fishing trip.

Elliott and Sharon Land visited with their former neighbours, Norm and Judy Cuthbertson at Strathmore last week.

Brook and Josie Johnson from Lac Ste. Anne spent a few days with Bob and Maxine Baird attending the Bull-a-rama and visiting with friends.

Dave and Linda Chick spent a week at Garner Lake, near Lac La Biche, fishing and boating. Joining them were their daughter, Chireen, Rory and girls and Rory’s parents, Bud and Jackie Shipton.

Breanne Kent spent the weekend with grandparents, Dale and Melody, taking in the rodeo highlights. Lisa Kent and son, Mac, are near Humboldt, Sk. staying with Rick who is working out there.

Alex and Deanna Montbriand from Fort Qu’Appelle, Sk. went fishing at Slave Lake with Kent and Evelyn Johnson returning in time to take in the weekend bull a rama highlights.
