Half a dozen dogs poisoned over the weekend - A Look Back

2001 - 10 YEARS AGO

• The Main Street is forever changing as older buildings are replaced with more modern structures. The former Starling and Innocent building on Main Street was the latest casualty.

• A proposal from the town’s Park and Leisure department to make Stettler’s Community Hall a non-smoking environment was a topic of discussion at Stettler Town Council’s regular meeting on April 3. The motion was passed unanimously and the policy will be in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for all functions held after May 1.

1991 - 20 YEARS AGO

• Stettler lawns aren’t the only things turning green this spring. A recent poll indicates 75% of town residents would support a comprehensive recycling program. And 50% say they are willing to pay for it.

• The 11th annual Stettler Trade Show will open in the community centre, curling rink and the Agriplex this weekend. Trade Show 91 and Livestock Extravaganza will feature more than 100 exhibitors and displays.

1981 - 30 YEARS AGO

• There were joint winners this year of the Murray Nelson Memorial Trophy, an annual award for contribution as volunteer officials to minor sports. Recipients were Bob and Shirley Schulze, Frank and Carlene Cassidy, Chuck and Lori Johnson.

• The Carroll Community Club will soon have their annual quilt raffle. The club has a reputation for their hand-made quilts that they have been making for 35 years, an art handed down from generation to generation.

1971 - 40 YEARS AGO

• The third annual Music Festival was an unqualified success, repeating all over again the triumphs of 1969 and 1970. Sponsored by Stettler Rotary Club, the festival attracted over 800 entries comprising more than 1000 persons.

• Jack Rairdan has placed first at the district level in the senior class of the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual essay contest on the significance of Remembrance Day. Jack will receive his award at the Vimy Night banquet in Memorial Hall.

1961 - 50 YEARS AGO

• The newly formed Stettler Rifle and Pistol Club has acquired land suitable for pistols, rim fire, six mile north of town. Members and interested parties are invited to bring axes and power saws to finish clearing the site.

• Tom Jackson told the Independent that it is 46 years ago this week that he took up the old wooden sidewalks of Main Street Stettler. He filled in for the cement, and also filled in the old town well in the square, using the first town team.

1951 - 60 YEARS AGO

• Miss Marlene Tigner is the Frontenac Chapter of the IODE candidate for Calgary Stampede Queen. Tickets valued at 23 cents each represent a vote, and holder of the lucky ticket wins a new Meteor car.

• The Ray Little Radio Cowboy Show held in Stettler Armories was enjoyed by a full house. The show was brought here under the auspices of the Stettler Kinsmen.

1941 - 70 YEARS AGO

• The safe at Botha Post Office was once again raided and blown up. This is the third burglary at this post office, with Mr. Friend as the victim, and he is probably figuring on taking out burglary insurance.

• Spring has arrived in ideal form - creeks, sloughs, and pot holes are full, and the land seems fairly saturated in most places. Some fields are already showing a bright green.

1931 - 80 YEARS AGO

• There was an epidemic of dog poisoning last Sunday, and half a dozen fine dogs were lost to strychnine. There is no clue to the poisoner, and the town should offer a reward.

• The engineer will be in Stettler to survey the route of the main highway running through town. The highway will be graded to Coronation this summer and likely gravelled to Castor.

1921 - 90 YEARS AGO

• The head of a giant horned dinosaur from the Red Deer River southwest of Stettler has been shipped to the Royal Ontario Museum of Toronto. The animal is estimated to have lived three million years ago.

• Mr. Ches Banford of Edmonton has purchased the Home Bakery in Stettler, and took charge April 4. Mr. Banford is well known here, and will be an addition to the business part of town.

1911 - 100 YEARS AGO

• Lawrence Bros, have been appointed Castor representatives for the Alberta Produce Co., who have taken over the Stettler Creamery, and will purchase cream for that institution each week commencing at once.

• Spring painting is the order of the day, and a large number of new houses are in the hands of the painter and decorator. This is not only a sign of spring, but of the prosperity of the town.
