Giving tree is up and waiting

If you have come to the Stettler Public Library in the past few weeks, you will have noticed the Christmas tree as you walked through the door.

If you have come to the Stettler Public Library in the past few weeks, you will have noticed the Christmas tree as you walked through the door. This tree has a special purpose: this is the giving tree. The purpose of the giving tree is to allow everybody to donate a gift or money to the Stettler Christmas Hamper Society and have it in a convenient location like the library.

Donations are gratefully accepted for all ages but the need is for teenagers, aged 12 to 18, particularly boys. Gifts can be placed directly under the giving tree but if you want to make a cash donation, please bring it directly to the desk and we will make sure that it gets to the Hamper Society. All gifts must be delivered to the library by Dec. 17 so that we can deliver them to the Hamper Society the following day.

There will be no Storytime until Saturday, Jan. 9 due to the fact that I am away.

Teen book club and teen night will also be taking a break over Christmas and will return on Wednesday, Jan. 6, both at 6 p.m. The last night for both programs this year will be Dec. 16.

Rhyming Kids will also be taking a break over the Christmas holidays and will be returning in January.

Do you have someone that is difficult to buy for but loves to reading? Why don’t you get them a membership to the Stettler Public Library? With access to millions of books throughout Alberta, a membership is really a gift that keeps giving. Thanks to Parkland Regional Library and The Alberta Library, the book selection is not limited to what is found within the walls of the Stettler Public Library. Also don’t forget the movies, music, audiobooks, large print and multilingual books that are available.

What if your loved one can no longer read regular books and large print books are too cumbersome? A library membership can help you or your loved one access the wonders of a Daisy reader and the books from the CNIB. The Stettler Public Library has five Daisy Readers that can be loaned to patrons. Audiobooks available from the CNIB can only be read by Daisy Readers. The library has a selection of Daisy wheels available for borrowing. But if there is something that you would like to listen to, please ask. We are more than willing to order in any titles that you request.

Memberships are an inexpensive but a valuable gift to give. A family membership is $20 per year. An adult membership is $10 and a student or child can get a membership for $5 per year.

The Stettler Public Library’s holiday hours are set. The library will be closing at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 24 and will reopen on Monday, Dec. 28 for our regular hours. On Thursday, Dec. 31, the library will also be closing at 3 p.m. and will reopen for regular hours on Saturday, Jan. 2.
