That winter wonderland outdoors goes a long way toward inspiring the Christmas spirit, doesn’t it?

Mr. Tim (my son with Down syndrome) is eager to get on with the decorating and I’ve long ago relented on letting him play Christmas music. Here at the library, we have a wide selection of crafts and activities planned for all ages this month to foster the joy of this season.

If you’re planning some festive baking, why not bring a couple dozen to our Cookies & Crafts event on Dec. 14 at 1 p.m.? We’ll be doing a cookie exchange followed by crafting a magic Christmas shoe to hang on your tree. Get a variety of sweet treats for the holidays and an afternoon of crafting in one day!

For all your snuggling-by-the-fire needs, we have Christmas movies, books, games, and puzzles for you to enjoy with family and friends.

If you don’t already have a library card, memberships are free for those who live in the town and county of Stettler. It’s the best buy you can imagine.

Just one look at your checkout receipt details the amount you’ve saved by borrowing items from the library. Membership gives you access to e-audiobooks, ebooks, and magazines and newspapers worldwide. So, come in and sign up for your card today.

This is better than any Black Friday or Boxing Day deal!

Children:

If you aren’t in the Christmas spirit yet, Something Cool After School (Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 p.m.) will help make it happen!

Make your own Advent Calendar to get you to Christmas on Dec. 5. Next week, we’ll show you how to make paper angels for your Christmas tree or for another spot that needs something cute on Dec. 10. Then on Dec. 12, you will learn how to make crystal snowflakes. Ages six and up.

Enjoy the Christmas classics you remember from childhood with your children (0-5 yrs) as well as some new seasonal favourites at Read & Rhyme on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:30 a.m.  Ask about 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten to keep track of your family's reading. You receive a small prize each time you reach your family reading goals.

Teens & ’Tweens:

Teen Scene always has something great to do on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. Get your inner artist going with a paint night at the library on Dec. 11.

Penguin or poinsettia—we can’t wait to see what your masterpiece will be. Ages 10+.

Have adventures with a great cast of characters at Dungeons & Dragons Night Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. Ages 13 +. Snacks will play a role.

Adults:

Are you a caregiver? How about meeting with others to share information, tips, and support at our Caregiver Support Group on Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. Don’t take the caregiving journey alone!

Make an adorable nutcracker Christmas tree ornament from popsicle sticks with Crystal’s Crafters on Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. Call the library to book your spot.

For anyone struggling to cope with someone close to them who drinks, Al-Anon can offer understanding support. We meet Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.

Stettler Art Club gathers on Thursdays at 6 p.m. to create, discuss, and collaborate on art projects. Provide your own supplies. All levels are welcome.

Enjoy the sounds of the season with other musicians at Ukulele Circle where we make musical magic on Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. You can join us even if you don’t own an instrument as we have a couple of ukuleles at the library to use.

The Afternoon Friends meet each Tuesday at 1 p.m. for games, movies, or crafts at a relaxed pace. Join us on Dec. 10, for the exciting build-up until some lucky person shouts, “Bingo!”

Reader’s Circle welcomes you to join them this month reading The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes, “a dexterously-crafted narrative of unlooked-for consequences.” Copies of the book are available at the library. Then join our discussion on Dec. 18 at 6:30 p.m.

Have you noticed some slipping of your memory? At Minds in Motion, a program of the Alzheimer Society, we spend time in simple exercise and social games that promote the use of your faculties. Everyone is welcome, including caregivers.

All Ages:

Explore your creativity and build exciting structures through teamwork, problem-solving, and imagination at LEGO Club on Dec. 7 from 3-4 p.m. Make it a fun family event.

If the upcoming new year holds a job search for you, why not book an appointment with our experienced employment resource volunteer for help in getting your resume up-to-date? Spots are available on Thursdays from 1-3 p.m.

On Monday nights from 8-9 p.m., Stettler and Rocky Mountain House Public Libraries meet online for a night of gaming. Get the link from the library to participate in the group chat and be sure to sign up with Nintendo Switch Online so you can be part of the Nintendo games.
