Former Byemoor resident chosen to speak at Remembrance Day

The latest from Byemoor and Endiang

A former Byemoor resident, Cpl. Hunter Maginn, was the chosen guest speaker at the Stettler Legion’s annual Remembrance Day service. The service was held at the Performing Arts Centre in Stettler on Nov. 11. It was a proud moment for the Maginn family.

Hunter, who was raised at Byemoor, is the son of Rob and Rhonda Maginn.

Rhonda Maginn was honoured to be asked to introduce her son to the assembly. Corporal Maginn is currently stationed at the Edmonton Garrison Military Base. Outside his Canadian training, he has also received training in Alaska and has been deployed to Poland.

Byemoor School held its Remembrance Day service on Nov. 7 with guests from the Stettler Legion delivering a traditional Remembrance Day service. The students added to the program with recitations of Remembrance Day poems.

The community potluck supper held at the Endiang Community Hall on Nov. 8 had a nice crowd who enjoyed the large assortment of main dishes and desserts. Folks also enjoyed the opportunity to visit with friends and neighbours.

The supper was hosted by the Endiang Community Society. The 50/50 draw with proceeds going to the Endiang Cemetery was won by Jim Wasdal, who graciously donated his winnings to the cemetery.

For anyone who has been meaning to donate to the Endiang Cemetery following its unfortunate theft this fall, but has misplaced the address, it is: Endiang Cemetery, Box 354 Endiang, AB T0J 1G0.

The Stettler Regional Fire Department hosted an Open House at the Big Valley Fire Station with volunteers joining from the Byemoor Fire Station on Saturday, Nov. 16.

Visitors were able to meet the firefighters, tour the station and see a very interesting live demonstration. The local fire stations need more volunteers to continue to operate, so anyone interested in joining is urged to apply.

The Church at Endiang, with the organizational expertise of Karyn Tateson, once again hosted the Operation Christmas Child shoebox packing party at the Endiang Community Hall on Nov. 16.

Church members and community volunteers spent the afternoon packing shoeboxes for less fortunate children in Central America, West Africa, the Philippines and Ukraine.

By the end of the afternoon, an impressive 138 shoeboxes were packed, very remarkable for a small community. Many folks, some of whom were not able to help pack boxes, generously sent donations of cash to help cover the costs of shipping the boxes overseas. The Church at Endiang asked God’s blessing on the shoeboxes and for the children receiving them at its Sunday evening service before they make their way to children around the globe. It’s hoped Christmas will be a little brighter for the youngsters receiving the gifts.

Charity begins at home and in order to also help families in need locally, an amazing amount of donations were also sent to the Stettler and District FCSS (Family and Community Support Services) for distribution in the town and county of Stettler and area.

Hilda and Bill raised four children on the farm – Lester, Scharlotte, Gerry and Glenda. They retired to Hanna in 1972 when Lester took over the farm.
