Floor curling and crib wrap up for summer

Endiang Enterprise

No sooner had we reported the spring thaw had been slow than we got a few days of plus 15 Celsius weather with a wind and the run-off became rapid. Culverts couldn’t handle all the water and water went over the roads in places. Some sloughs backed up into farmer’s yards as well.

But spring quickly disappeared on Thursday when we woke up to a blanket of snow and the return of winter with a spring snowstorm.

Just learned that 2011 marks the Coal Mining Centennial for the Drumheller Valley. I found the information interesting and since many men from our district worked in the Drumheller mines in the winter months and several folks from these parts got their coal there I thought I would share some of this information.

The first coal came out of the ground in 1911 in wheelbarrows and in the years that followed 139 mines were registered in the Drumheller Valley.  Communities sprung up around the many of the mine heads and for the next 50 years coal defined Drumheller. The last mine closed in 1979. Coal is no longer king in the valley, today natural gas, agriculture and tourism rule.

Events are planned throughout the year to mark the centennial and starts with the Miner’s Festival Apr. 30 – May 1. More information can be accessed at www. drumhellermining100.com where there are also a number of nostalgic photos of the coal mining heyday.

Many folks watched the Doan brothers, Shane and Brook, of our neighbouring community of Halkirk on the TV reality show Mantracker on Sunday evening. It was great to see the local boys succeed in not getting hunted down before they reached the finish line.
