February’s birthday party comes faster - Rumsey Record

Monday, Jan. 17, was the day of the birthday party of this month at St. Mary’s Health Care Center in Trochu.

Dariel McNaughton and her group of helpers hosted a very nice afternoon. “Memory Lane” musicians from Three Hills were on hand to make beautiful sounds that everyone enjoyed. The folks seem to always relate to the old time tunes and tap their feet to the music. One of the ladies having her birthday this month was Faye Gregg. She just turned 97 and was up dancing to the music with her husband Henry. Both are residents of the lodge in Trochu. Don Gordon has his birthday this month as does Kathy Wagstaff. Everyone surely did enjoy the delicious cakes that Dariel made. Each resident having a birthday received a small useful gift, courtesy of the Rumsey Ag Society.

February birthday party will be on Monday, Feb 14 when I will be the hostess. Any willing hands for helpers will be most gratefully accepted. This is not the regular day for the birthday party as they are usually held on the third Monday of the month. Feb. 21 is the third Monday but is also ‘family day’, which is not a good day to have a party at the lodge.

About three weeks ago, Ryan Bremmer had a very bad ski-doo accident in the north country where he is working now. Passersby on the road saw the accident and stopped to help get Ryan to the hospital and thus were instrumental in saving his life, as the temperatures that day were very cold and he would surely have had more injuries had they not stopped to help. The family are most grateful. Ryan has spent some time in Edmonton hospital and has had some surgeries with the results showing no paralysis. He is now walking with the aid of a walker and with his high spirits, will beat the odds. Ryan is now home in Morrin, where he is spending some recovery time with his mom Shirley, Kelly and sister Cory. Best wishes to you, Ryan, from all your friends here at Rumsey.

Best wishes to Rhonda Lunn, who has had hip surgery in Red Deer hospital and is presently staying with friends for a few days following her hospital stay. We miss you, Rhonda. Word has been received that Rhonda is home again now and ready to take on the world, soon we hope.

Saturday, Jan 22, was the funeral service in Drumheller Church of the Nazarene for Waldemar Wolf of Munson. Rev. Harold Hunter did the service. Sympathy to his family, Sally, his wife and their family. Their daughter Becky is married to Bill Kowalchuk Jr. from this area.

Other folks travelled to Strathmore to attend the memorial celebration of the life of Jack Primrose. Jack was born and raised here and no matter where he moved and lived, always considered Scollard home. (Scollard is the next district north of Rumsey). Again, we extend sympathies to all his family and to his many extended family members in this area. Jack passed away Dec. 11 in the hospital in Strathmore. He was in the process of moving to the lodge at the time of his passing.

This is the week of the annual men’s bonspiel in Rumsey. By the time the paper is printed, curling will be in full swing. Thursday evening is the oyster feed at the rink so plan to take that in. On Saturday, Jan. 29, will be the banquet and presentation of prizes to the winners. The evening is open to anyone wishing to attend and I guarantee the meal will be delicious.

The next church service in the Morrin United Church will be Sunday, Feb. 6, when Rev. Mervn and Marilyn Penfound of Stettler will be taking the service.

The Morrin School would like to invite everyone to the Morrin Community Hall on Monday, Feb. 14 for the annual Valentine’s tea, featuring strawberry shortcake this year. The time of the tea is from 1-3 p.m. Bring your favourite valentine and come to the tea.
