Family game night focusing on literacy on Jan. 27 - Literally Yours

2011 is officially here and with January comes Family Literacy Day, which takes place every Jan. 27 to celebrate adults and children reading and learning together and to encourage everyone to spend at least 15 minutes daily enjoying a learning activity.

This year’s theme is “Play for Literacy” and the Stettler Public Library is hosting a family game night on Thursday, Jan. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. Playing games that encourage literacy and numeracy - such as board games, card games and word games - is a great way for parents and children to practice their literacy skills and have fun. Everyone is welcome to come and join on the fun of family game night.

Would you like to attend “Read and Rhyme Playtime” but can’t due to travel issues? The Stettler Public Library is now bringing the popular program to you. Alicia brings her bag of tricks and energy to the Erskine Waverly Rooms on the first Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m. She then travels onto the Byemoor Drop-in Centre on the second Monday of the month at 10:30 a.m. The popular preschool program is open to everyone. You don’t even have to live in those communities to participate; you are always welcome to join in the fun.

Reader’s Circle on Thursday, Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. is my favourite gathering of the year. Join us as we talk about our favourite books of the past year. The books chosen have not necessarily been published in 2010 but we have enjoyed them in 2010.

Are you stuck at the recreation centre on Wednesday nights because of hockey but you are not the one playing the sport? Are you between the ages of 8 and 12? Join Alicia for Game Night on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Come and have fun at the library.

The after-school program returns on Thursday, Jan. 6 from 4 to 5 p.m. Anyone between the ages of six to 10 is welcome to join the crafting fun. What a great way to spend time at the library.

Read and Rhyme Playtime and Itsy Bitsy Yoga will continue on in the new year. Join Alicia on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Preschoolers bring your big people and have fun rhyming and crafting on Wednesday mornings and moving and grooving on Friday mornings.

Don’t have to make it to the library but you can’t imagine life without reading. Give the Stettler Public Library a call and we can help you out. Go Bags are designed specifically for busy people. You can call us at 403-742-2292 and let us know what you like to read or watch. We will fill the bag for you and have it ready by noon the next business day.

You can find out about the programs and services offered at the Stettler Public Library by going to our website at http://spl.prl.ab.ca. The website is updated frequently and it is a convenient way to keep track of your library books with a quick link to your account.

You do not have to come up to the library to drop off your library items. You can use our return slot on the left hand side of the main doors. The return slot is prominently placed in the brick wall.
