Family Day in Alberta has been promoting bonding between grandparents, parents, and their children since 1990.
This year, the Stettler Public Library is partnering with the Town of Stettler, Stettler and District Family and Community Support Services, Heartland Youth Centre and the Family Resource Network for a day of free fun at the Stettler Recreation Centre’s Winter Carnival.
Start with a pancake breakfast and spend the whole day at the Rec Centre where you can take in a magic show, carnival games, a photo booth, shinny, a public skate, a hot dog lunch and a family swim.
The library will also be open from 10 am to 4 pm for your reading and entertainment needs. Just ask us for our family read-aloud recommendations.
Children:
Characters and quotes from books we enjoyed as children or while reading to our own children and grandkids often become lasting memories and part of family lore.
That’s one of the many reasons we at the library promote Read and Rhyme for little ones (ages 0-5) and their parents, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:30 a.m.
Reading a thousand books before a child reaches kindergarten is achievable if you do it a little a day.

Kids ages 6 and up will love what’s planned at Something Cool After School at 4 p.m. on Tue, Feb. 21 when it is Monster Day with ghoulish crafts and games. Then on Thu, Feb. 23, we’ll be playing mini golf.
Come enjoy our movie matinee on Thu, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. featuring the adventures of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. There will be popcorn and admission is free.
On Fri, Feb. 17, Red Deer College is coming to our library to present Red Hot Science, a program designed to intrigue youngsters with investigating and discovering the world around us.
The first session at 10:30 a.m. is for kids ages 6 and up and will explore circuits featuring Rock, Paper, Scissors. At 1 p.m. older children will make their own wearable compasses (ages 10+).
To give your child a boost with schoolwork, we offer free tutoring for Kindergarten to Grade 12 at the library, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Call for an appointment.
Teens and ’Tweens:
Brighten up your day with a sun catcher you make yourself on Wed, Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m. Snacks provided. Ages 10+.
Adults:
Relax on Zoom with Yoga Nidra with Alicia Tate on Thu, Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. for immune support and better sleep.
Call us for the Zoom link. If you turn off the camera, no one will know that you have fallen asleep.
Afternoon Friends are adults who meet Tuesday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. for crafts, games and other fun activities. Join us Feb. 21 when we’ll play Roll-a-Monster. On Feb. 28, we’ll enjoy a movie matinee together.
Are you or someone you know experiencing cognitive decline? Minds in Motion Lite every Thursday at 2 p.m. offers games and socialization to stimulate mental acuity All are welcome.
If writing is your thing, join with like-minded folks for an inspiring evening of sharing your work and feedback with Stettler Writers’ Club on Thu, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Bring a pen, paper and your creativity.
Take some yarn, a crochet hook, and a little patience and you can create something wonderful. Spend the afternoon with others at Crystal’s Crochet Club who love the fiber arts on Sat, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. Anyone who works with yarn in any way can join us.
There’s still time to pick up a copy of this month’s Reader’s Circle Book Club choice, Dreaming Spies, by Laurie R. King, a Sherlock Holmes mystery with his wife Mary Russell. Plan to join the discussion Tue, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m.

Show up on Sat, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. and duke it out as your favourite Nintendo character at the next Super Smash Bros. tournament. All are welcome.
Resume Rescue takes place Thursdays, 1-3 p.m. with our volunteer resource person who has more than 30 years’ experience in employment support. Call for an appointment.
We offer other services like disc cleaning ($2/disc) and will help you print off government documents, find that book to read or movie to watch or locate a service in your community.
