Elks were busy last week

At their April meeting, the Elks hosted their Provincial Chairman, Brother Leonard Shain

At their April meeting, the Elks hosted their Provincial Chairman, Brother Leonard Shain, who is from the Sherwood Park Lodge. Accompanying him from the same lodge was Brother Bob Walsh. Brother Shain gave an informative briefing on the future of the Elks, explaining some of the new proposals being put forth. These proposals, meant to put the organization at the forefront in convincing new volunteers to join and enhance all the great work that the Elks carry out, will be on the agendas at both the upcoming provincial meeting and the national convention.

The Elks Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, May 31. For the past few years, this tournament has been dedicated to the memory of Elmer Kerbes, but this year it is reverting back to the original designation due to Brother Lloyd Duncan’s passing. The tournament will utilize the same format with a breakfast, lunch and prizes. Keep an eye out for posters with additional details.

The Elks will be supporting the Big Valley School students on their exchange program to Quebec and an E-Free member who is heading to Bolivia. It is an honour to help these youngsters in such worthy endeavors.

The Club draw was won by Lorne Parkin who flipped it over to the provincial chair, who is collecting money to make sure the National Grand Exalted Ruler gets his moustache and beard shaved. All proceeds raised from this “shearing” will go to the children’s fund. Of note here is that this “wool” has been accumulating for a very long time. The Lodge and members donated to the cause as well.

The first 200 Club Draw for 2014-15 was carried out and the winners were: Joan Grover, Vern Thurow (Hanna Elks), Brad Greiner, and Marilyn Olmstead.

The Big Valley Inn Crib Finale hosted 17 players on Sunday, Apr. 27. Lawrence Wilkie came first, Teresa Greig was second, Stan Nattestad was third with the booby going to Phil Bryant. Mary Wilkie won the regular draw and Ernie Petrussa won the 50/50. Throughout the afternoon tickets were drawn for various door prizes and the event concluded with a great supper. The Big Valley Inn Crib players wish everyone a great summer.

Trudy and Dorothy would like to thank everyone for their continued support and participation and will contact everyone when crib is ready to start up again in the fall.
