Construction students keep it going

Wildcat News

Outside work has been slow what with the nasty temperatures, students tend to be inside warming up more than staying outside ,so I choose not to push too hard.

The golf shack is almost ready to go though, shingles are finished, all that remains is to attach some CNC cut-outs to fancy it up.

The Botha elementary gazebo needs more framing and sheathing on the roof. After this the shingling will begin.

I have one class of Grade 9 industrial arts students who are doing very well.

Since starting to teach Grade 9 classes three years ago, I have brought in more projects than I would normally use for Grade 10 students.

Getting an early start with the 9s gets me grade 10 students (the Grade 9 students who choose to take Grade 10 building) up to speed quickly. The process seems to work.

There are roughly 15 students in the second term who are taking Building 1.1 and 1.2 back to back. They have the potential to earn six credits which is a bonus.

Grade 11 and 12 students are divided into framing and cabinetry classes.

After learning the basics of lay-out, they have two playhouses on the go. One is in an octagon shape, the other is 8 x 10 with a nice little porch on the entry side.

These playhouses are not spoken for, so consider purchasing them for your own children or using them as a fundraiser item.

The intermediate cabinetry students have been following a project in constructing wood-joints. These projects are designed to be picture frames that would hold an 8 X 10 picture and I have provided pictures of their wood-shop teacher for anyone that wants one. After wood joints, the students will begin building a basic bedside cabinet with one door and a drawer.

The senior cabinet makers are building a computer desk with a hinged extension supported by two legs that are hinged as well for easy transport. The original design came from Lauren Brus, who built the prototype during the first term.

So it's all steaming along, classes are well attended and motivation is high.
