Stettler’s Communities against Abuse association organized an open house last Wednesday, April 28 to brief the community about their activities and their new location, within the Christ King school building, at the northeast entrance.

Program director Judy Beebe said their program, marking its 20th year, was being funded largely by donations of community groups, including the provincial body of the IODE and United Way in Red Deer. She said they also received some funding from the federal government through Health Canada.

Beebe says they are quite busy in their program because they do counseling for both abused children and adults who were abused when they were children, alongside conducting a preventive program through schools.

“We want the children to grow up in safe environments and we don’t want them to be abused or to be bullied,” she said.

“All of our therapists are master’s level and their background is strictly focused on dealing with sexual abuse and trauma.”

The only rural based program in the province dealing with these issues, Communities against Abuse serves six school divisions, including Clearview, Battle River, Prairie Lands, Wolf Creek, Golden Hill and Buffalo Trails.
