Mother Nature proved to be intransigent and let rain and cold wind lash Main Street in Stettler on June 4.

Twenty artists huddled under shop awnings or inside participating businesses for protection and warmth as browsers took a look at their creations.

“There have been lots of people. I’m surprised because usually Saturday is kind of dull around here. Had the weather been warmer, it would have been a lot nicer,” said Delores Duris, member of the Stettler United Church art group.

“There aren’t as many people out as last year, though.“

Endiang artist Luann Buchwitz wasn’t sure about staying on Main Street until 5 p.m.

“There has been a lot of people going by, but everybody is in a hurry because it’s cold,“ said Buchwitz.

Cabinet of Curiosities owner and event organizer Andrea Hatch was happy with the number of artists who showed up.

“People who have come out are people who are enthusiastic and it just proves that people will come out in just about any weather,” said Hatch.

“Most of the businesses have been great. If the artists actually showed up and brave the conditions, the businesses put a lot of them inside.”

While she and the organizers briefly entertained the thought of cancelling the event, they decided to go ahead because they knew that some artists would still show up.

“We thought that if people were willing to come out and want to come out, then we’ll find somewhere to keep them warm,” said Hatch.

“That was the goal this morning. How many awnings can we shove someone under? “

Hatch had tales about the endurance and preparedness of artists and browsers.

“I saw a little lady going around and she was totally prepared. She had a big hat and mitts on,” said Hatch.

“I thought, ’Hey! You were smarter than me!’ She had a winter coat and everything.”

All artists and clients agreed that the Art Walk was a great showcase for local talent.

“The Art Walk is a nice thing to have,” said Duris.

“Stettler and the surrounding area have got a lot of talent.”
