Happy New Year! We wish you many blessings for 2011. For a change, some Grade 3-4 students contributed to today’s article by giving their perspectives on the things that are happening at Christ King School. Read on to find out what they have to say.

The K/1s had fun baking chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen. They mixed and stirred and tasted and munched them! In social studies, they are learning about culture and family traditions. Natasja Willms brought Indonesian chicken soup for them to try and told them about Indonesia, where her parents were born. She showed them some pictures of Indonesia and they played with a shadow puppet from the island of Java. (by Jeri-Anne Georget)

The Grade 2 class is getting excited for their next visit to their Golden Pals at the Paragon Place. They walk there, sing songs, read books and have a snack. They enjoy playing with their pals and it makes the seniors happy, too. (by Makenna Gallagher)

The Grade 3-4s are having lots of fun in science. We built box cars for our unit on “Wheels and Levers”. We were looking at the different places we could put the axle in the wheel and how that would change the way the car moves. In language, we are free writing in our journals for ten minutes each day to improve our writing skills. We are also writing for the newspaper. (by A.J. Walker)

The Grade 5-7s are starting up a basketball team. Basketball practices were supposed to start Monday, Jan. 10, but due to the buses not running, practice was cancelled. The first game will hopefully be on Jan. 12 against Stettler Middle School. Kristy Gulak, the Grade 5/6 teacher, is the coach of the basketball team. (by Jack Willms and Connor Wyness)

The Grade 5/6 class is doing dance in gym with their gym teacher, Sheldon Gallagher. They are learning hip-hop and making their own routines in groups of four or five. They are working hard to find good moves that match the song “Strike It Up”. They practice four times a week to try to finish their dance.

The junior high class is enjoying making CO2 cars. They have been working on them for the last month. They’re allowed to make it in any shape and colour. They are also getting ready for the Chinese New Year. The class is making art to celebrate the special occasion. They’re hoping to have a celebration on Feb. 3 and maybe even eat Chinese food. The school went on a ski trip on Jan. 6. Instead of Alliance where we have gone in the past, we went to Canyon Ski Hill. The tow rope was different than Alliance. It had plastic handles on it and Canyon has two chair lifts on their hill and two tee bars. There were three levels in ski lessons at Canyon. In level one, they taught us how to snow plow. In level two, they taught us how to zig zag down the hill and in level three, they taught us how to parallel ski. After we were done our lessons, we got to free ski. It was awesome!
