Challenge Day returns to William E. Hay High School

By Jorgen Rangen

We’ve had quite the week at William E. Hay high school.

On Oct. 18 and 19, our school was once again given the unique opportunity to participate in the Challenge Day.

The motto of Challenge Day, as quoted from the organization’s website is, “Imagine a world where every child feels safe, loved, and celebrated; where bullying, violence, and oppression are things of the past. This is the work of Challenge Day.”

Challenge Day is a one- day program designed for groups of 100 students.

Its goals are to create awareness of racism, sexism, bullying, violence, rumours, stereotypes, teasing, isolation, harassment, and hidden pressures to create an image or live up to the expectations of others. The Challenge Day mission is to provide youth and their communities with experiential programs that demonstrate the possibility of love and connection through the celebration of diversity, truth, and full expression. We would like to thank all the adult participants who took on a leadership role during the program to help make it a safe, enjoyable, and enlightening experience for everyone involved.

At our school, we have a “Be the Change” team that is dedicated to keeping the spirit of Challenge Day alive. They had a great turnout at their latest meeting with plenty of student support. Currently, they are selling Be the Change bracelets to fundraise for the purchase of trees to plant on Arbor Day. Anyone who would wish to help is welcome to contact the school.

Also, on the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 19, students attended a Career Fair hosted by William E. Hay. There were over 28 presenters from various post-secondary institutions. Jeffrey, from the Arts Institute of Vancouver, presented to different classes, including art, foods, cosmetology, comm. tech., and social studies 30.

On Halloween, SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) will be trick-or-treating for non-perishable food donations on behalf of the Stettler Food Bank. These students will present a slip of paper identifying themselves as they go from door to door. Please give generously and help those in need in our community.

Thank you for your

support and have a Happy Halloween!
