Centennial committee plans supplement to “Home Fires”

Halkirk’s centennial year 2012 is fast approaching and one of the projects planned for that year is an update to the Halkirk Home Fires history book which was published in 1985.

An editorial team has been established and a printer has been engaged. Residents should soon receive a brochure in the mail with details of the project. A website has been setup to assist with the finding of addresses etc. to put with the names of folks who should be included in the new book. Sympathy is extended to Peggy Green on the passing of her brother, Bob, on Feb. 3 in the Provost nursing home. Bob celebrated his 83 birthday on New Year’s Eve. Services will be held in April.

Congratulations to Amanda and Tyron Mossing of Calgary on the arrival of a 7lb 11oz baby boy, Reid Theodore, born on Dec. 31. The Mossings also have a two year old daughter, Claire. This is the fourth grandchild for Jim and Kathy Krautt and for great grandparents, Arnold and Dianne Ray of Castor.

On Thursday the Grade 1 to 6 students at the Mother Teresa school enjoyed a day of skiing at the Valley ski hill. Teachers Mrs. V. Pinkoski and Mrs. K. Golak, plus a number of parents, accompanied them. Mel Kent was the bus driver. On Saturday, the Grade 4 to 6 junior basketball team played at a four-team tournament in Donalda, and tied for first place. The proceeds of the tournament are being sent to Haiti. Our whole school has participated in a read-a-thon that will benefit the MS foundation. Great job, students.

Ellyn Schaffner has formed a drama club “Voltage” which includes the junior high students and practice is held every Thursday after school. They are preparing for a presentation of their production in spring. Kids Club, for grades 3 to 6, is also held on Thursday after school at the Circle Square Ranch.

The Halkirk Curling Club will be holding their men’s and ladies’ bonspiels during the first full week of March. Phone entrees to JD or Sandra at 884-2250 and let’s see if we can fill up the roster and get some good games going.

Watch for the dates of upcoming meetings to discus a rural water line in our area.

Maxine Baird joined with girlfriends last weekend to curl in a bonspiel in the lively community of Pollickville and they were successful in placing first in the first event.

Todd, Alison, Madelyn, Mikenna and Owen Schauer report they had a great time during their one-week winter break in Mazatlan, Mexico.

Anne Neilson, Shirley Brodersen, Helen Christianson and Arlene Charette returned this week from a month-long vacation in Peoria, Arizona. They enjoyed the lovely weather, which included two days of rare rain. Kay Nish drove them on a tour of Sedona’s lovely landscape.

Jim and Kathy Krautt recently returned from a 16-day island hopping tour of Maui, Oahu and Hawaii. They enjoyed the variety of the landscapes from the volcanic waste to the lush rain forest.

Rocky, Louanne, Allie, Katelyn and Ryan Dalmer arrived home on Saturday from a 10-day holiday in warmer weather. They stopped in LA to visit Mickey Mouse and then headed for San Diego. There they met up with Ralph, Norma and Vicky Stock at Carlsbad, took a trolley bus tour of the city, visited the Midway aircraft museum, golfed and swam in the ocean.

Lisa and Rick Kent and family have Lisa’s nephew, 6-month-old Cooper Chitwood staying with them while his parents and siblings are holidaying in Mexico.

Maxine Baird attended a rodeo secretaries clinic at the CPRA office in Calgary. While there she visited with her son Tom and Sandy.
