Canada’s Enduring Legacy

Library Corner for June 26, 2025

Despite war, scandal, division, and unrest, our vast dominion of Canada has endured for 158 years.

I’m old enough to remember our centennial in 1967, the songs, the celebrations, and Expo ’67 held in Montreal. It was popular that year to plan a centennial project, and my family’s plan was to build a basement rumpus room (remember that quaint term?).

The ambitious stack of faux wood panelling sat in our basement for eleven years, serving as a custom stage for childhood dramatic productions and other hijinks before my non-handy dad finally hired someone to complete the job.

Perhaps our library’s intriguing selection of DIY books and videos can inspire you to dream up a Canada Day project of your own.

In honour of our nation’s birthday, the library will be closed Tue, July 1, but watch for us in the  Canada Day Parade at 10 a.m., that day, followed by manning crafting stations and a photo booth at the Stettler Museum from 12 -4 p.m.
If you’re looking for some good family read-aloud books for vacation time or road trips, check our large collection for favourites old and new. And don’t think that audiobooks and e-audiobooks don’t count as “real” reading. These capture the imagination of all ages and stick in the memory just as effectively as a paper copy.

Make Read & Rhyme part of your weekly routine for the little ones in your life, 0-5 yrs. Join us Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Fridays at 10:30 a.m. for songs, stories, and fun! Ask about our program, 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. You can get a small prize for each reading milestone you reach.
