Sympathy is extended to the family of Irene Brooker who passed away on Sept. 16 in Hanna at the age of 83 years. Irene was a long-time resident of the Endiang community.
She was the daughter of Ole and Eleanor (Wasdal) Walle. Irene grew up on a farm southwest of Endiang with her siblings Arnold and Shirley Walle and Gordon, Wayne, Lynn, Kenneth, Bruce, Lorraine, Beverly and Chester Gallagher.
Irene married Sonny Brooker and they farmed northeast of Endiang where they raised their children Brenda and Marty. Irene was very involved in the community as an active volunteer. She was musically gifted and shared her talent with many.
Irene had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening and growing flowers as well as being a skilled homemaker. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing ladies' softball, and in later years floor curling.
Following Sonny’s passing, Irene retired to Hanna. Irene will always be remembered for her kind and helping nature. Our thoughts are with all of Irene’s family in their sad loss.
It was Irene’s wish to not have a funeral service, but donations in her memory may be made to the Endiang Cemetery at Box 321, Endiang, AB T0J 1G0.
The community was disappointed and disgusted to learn that Endiang Cemetery had been robbed of much of its maintenance equipment and tools from the cemetery storage shed.
The community takes pride in maintaining the cemetery well and this equipment is needed to accomplish that. It makes one wonder how anyone could stoop so low to steal from a cemetery.
The Endiang Cemetery Club has called an emergency meeting for Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Endiang Community Hall to deal with the recent theft of its equipment. All members of the community are welcome to attend.
The Byemoor Community Hall is in search of some younger volunteers to assist with hall events, catering and other duties needed to keep the community hall operating.
The long-time volunteers and board members can no longer manage without some much-needed assistance with upcoming events such as the Fall Roast Beef Supper on Oct. 19 and Santa Claus Day and Christmas Market on Nov. 30 as well as future events and operating the hall.
Anyone wishing to get involved may contact Dee Green, Rhonda Maginn or Michelle Foster.
The next Scapa Community Potluck Supper is set for Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Scapa Hall. All interested are welcome; just bring a favourite dish to contribute to the supper.
