The weather moderated nicely for Christmas and the holiday season making it easier for travelers to make their holiday visits. The warmer weather was appreciated by man and beast alike, and thankfully is still hanging on.
The Candlelight Service at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Scapa on Dec. 23 had a smaller than usual attendance due to inclement weather.
Those who did attend enjoyed the service by Pastor Matt Gillard, the candle lighting segment and the long-standing tradition of singing Silent Night in English and German.
Sympathy is extended to the family of Orval Hawthorne, who passed away on Dec. 29 at Daysland at 80 years of age. Orval grew up at Byemoor, the only child of Lloyd and Minnie Hawthorne.
Many will remember when Orval drove the cream truck from Byemoor and Endiang to the Dairy in Hanna. Orval had a number of occupations in various communities before settling in Daysland, and was well-liked where ever he went.
Our thoughts are with Orval’s wife Nelda, their three children Kelly, Lisa and Kim and their families in their sad loss. Orval will be long-remembered for his kind and friendly nature, having the gift of the gab and his out-going personality. He always had the time to stop for a visit with everyone. A Celebration of Life will be set at a later date.
Congratulations to Casey Wilkie and Kelsey (Hayden) McNeill who were married in Stettler on Dec. 31. A large crowd of family, friends and neighbours gathered at the Stettler Community Hall to wish them well, and as it turned out, to bring the New Year in.
The newlyweds will reside on the Wilkie ranch between Byemoor and Big Valley. We wish Casey and Kelsey all the best for a long and happy marriage.
Casey is the son of Don and Wanda Wilkie and Kelsey is the daughter of Greg and Karen Hayden.
Congratulations are sent to Allison Yates and Jacob Yasinski on their recent engagement. A wedding date hasn’t been set yet. Allison is the daughter of Rod and Angela Yates of Byemoor and Jacob is the son of Lee and Linda Yasinski of Delburne.
Endmoor Thunder U9 hockey team hosted a tournament in Byemoor on Jan. 7-8. Visiting teams were from Hanna, Delia, Drumheller and Camrose.
We send Happy New Year wishes to all the readers of our column. May all your problems last no longer than your New Year’s resolutions.
New Year’s Thought for the Day
“A New Year is like a blank book, it has 12 chapters and 365 pages, and you are the author. Our wish for you is that this year, you write the most beautiful story possible for yourself.”
