Byemoor-100-Centennial Celebration is fast approaching on Saturday, June 7, 2025. It is a good time to start planning your entries for the Centennial Parade going on at 11 a.m. on June 7.

It’s definitely important to have a good representation from the farms, families, organizations and clubs, businesses, neighbouring communities and anyone else interested in participating. Let’s make this parade one to remember. Contact Les Stulberg at 403-740-9336 for further information.

Byemoor, like many other communities, sprang up along the Hanna–Warden CNR railway in 1925 when the rail was laid from Warden Junction to Hanna. Although commonly called the Hanna–Warden Line, its official name is actually the CNR Endiang Subdivision.

The original settlement of Endiang was founded in 1910 about three miles northeast of present-day Endiang. The area had received its name from the first postmaster, William Foreman. He named it after a summer resort hotel the family had owned in the Muskoka Lakes region of Ontario. Endiang is a native language word meaning “Our Home”. However, when the railway came through, it missed the original Endiang settlement and the buildings were moved by horse power to the present site of Endiang.

The Endiang community celebrated its 100-year Centennial in 2010 with a large celebration.

In 2025, the Endiang community is marking its 115th anniversary, but the relocated hamlet is of course 100 years old this year, too.

When the railway came through the area now known as Byemoor it missed both Hartshorn and the original Leo settlements, which served the area at that time. After Byemoor was founded, Hartshorn and the original Leo faded away, and some of their buildings were relocated to Byemoor and the new Leo.

The name Byemoor was suggested by Leonard Browne. He had lived by the moorlands in England, so chose By-the-moor or Byemoor as a name to be considered.

Byemoor’s Centennial Celebration is on Saturday, June 7. Those interested can access updated information on the Byemoor’s Centennial page on Facebook.

In all, seven sidings had little hamlets develop along the rail line from Hanna to Warden. They were Dowling, Scapa, Endiang, Byemoor, Leo, Hackett and Sabine. Today, only Scapa, Endiang and Byemoor remain.

Scapa is celebrating its Centennial on August 15 – 16, 2025. It received its name from a suggestion of the first postmaster, J. B. Mackenzie, who named it after a location in his homeland of Scotland called Scapa Flow. Many events are planned for the weekend celebration. Those interested in the Scapa Centennial can follow the Scapa Hall Bulletin Board on Facebook for updated information.

Sympathy is extended to Ann Schuler and her family on the passing of her grandson Brandon Unrau on March 19 at the age of 29 years. Our thoughts are with Ann and all of Brandon’s family in their sad loss.

Sympathy is also extended to Jared and Raechel Boertien on the passing of Raechel’s uncle in Ingersoll, Ont. He was 46. Jared and Raechel flew home to Ontario for the funeral service. Our thoughts are with Raechel and Jared in their sad loss.

While in Ontario, they also visited Raechel’s parents at their dairy farm at Lakeside, Ont., as well as Jared’s grandma at Wasaga Beach, off Lake Huron, and Jared’s parents in Palmerston. They also got to meet a new baby niece born on March 3. It was a busy, bittersweet trip for sure.

Don’t miss the action at the Byemoor Bull-a-Rama on Friday, April 18. The bull bustin’ begins at 7 p.m. at the Endmoor Arena in Byemoor.

Happy Birthday greetings are sent to Clifford Wilkie, celebrating his 81st birthday on April 4. Have a great day, Clifford.
