Bonspiels come with good food

RUMSEY RECORD -- The snowmobilers were out enjoying the new dump of snow this weekend. It did put a fresh coat everywhere.

RUMSEY RECORD -- The snowmobilers were out enjoying the new dump of snow this weekend. It did put a fresh coat everywhere. I wouldn't want all that snow that the eastern provinces and states received though, over two feet of snow in such a short time is hard to deal with. The snow plows will have the roads cleared by the time this hits the paper, I am sure.

The men's bonspiel is starting this week, so head into town to watch some great curling. There will also be lots of good meals to take advantage of during the week of each bonspiel held in town. Fresh homemade soup and desserts with hamburgers, steak; oyster night on Thursday, banquet night on Saturday; lots of reasons to get off that couch and go up to the curling rink and visit with the neighbours. Don't forget that the ladies' bonspiel will be going Feb. 10 to 13, so if that interests you, then give Jackie Watts a call and sign up, they would love to have more teams.

The meeting at the drop-in on Thursday, Jan. 28, is going ahead as planned and the seniors are hoping more people will attend to let their opinions known. It is tough to see a building close in a small town and it is a really nice place that can serve as a smaller meeting place verses the larger locations of the hall or agriplex. The meeting will start at 10 a.m.

I thought I might close with some tips on how to fight the winter blues since we seem to be deep in the middle of a long, cold one.

#1. Get as much natural sunlight as possible: take a short walk outside to soak up your daily amount of Vitamin D and fresh air. Open those curtains and let in as much natural light as possible to cheer up your mood.

#2. Exercise regularly – it can be as effective as medication for breaking your seasonal blues. Regular exercise can boost serotonin, endorphins and other feel-good brain chemicals.

#3 – Reach out to family and friends for a friendship boost. Go for coffee, volunteer to help somewhere, reach out to someone new, break the habit of retreating to old comfortable singular activities that might isolate you.

#4 – Eat the right diet. Eating small, well-balanced meals throughout the day, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, will help you keep your energy up and minimize mood swings. Experiment with new recipes, try new flavours, anything to break the rut of boring and bland.

#5 – Take steps to deal with stress by making time for fun. Practicing daily relaxation techniques can really help you manage stress, reduce negative emotions and boost feelings of joy and well-being. Do something you enjoy every day. Having fun is a great stress release, try a new hobby, explore new subjects, visit your local library for some ideas.

I hope this week treats you well. Have a good one.
