Big Valley Oil Kings deserve support, next home game this Friday night

Big Valley Bulletin

With playoffs now underway, the Big Valley Oil Kings are 1-1 with the Sedgewick Sabres after a 7-3 loss Wednesday night and a 4-3 win at the home game on Saturday.

Wednesday the Kings seemed unable to capitalize on the many power play opportunities handed to them. Though Big Valley managed to stay out of the “sin bin” for most of the game, the results were not in the King’s favour. With Sedgewick ahead 5-0 going in to the third, goalie Greg Robbins was replaced with back-up Ryan Pietrucki. Though Big Valley won the period 3-2, it was too little, too late. Points for the game were: Jeff Smitten one goal and one assist; Aaron Lamson one goal and one assist; Lanny Duncan one goal and an assist each to Brett Muhlbach, Kent Friedley and Claye Spady.

In front of an unusually large and vocal crowd, Saturday night’s home game saw the Oil Kings firing on all cylinders. Big Valley got on the board first by scoring on the power play, which was replied to in kind fashion by Sedgewick. The Kings finished off the first period with another power play goal to lead 2-1. It was end-to-end action as goalie Greg Robbins was phenomenal between the posts, sparking his team on to some great offensive opportunities. With the Sabres getting the only goal on yet another power play in the second, the Kings gained the upper hand again early in the third. Sedgewick replied not long after to tie the game up at 3. With only 1:14 left on the clock, Aaron Lamson took advantage of a misplay at the Sabres blue line and charged in on a breakaway to score the winning goal. Though Sedgewick pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, Big Valley maintained control to tie the best of five series. Points for this game were: Jeff Smitten one goal and and two assists; Aaron Lamson one goal and two assists; Tyson Keith one goal and one assist; Kent Friedley one goal and Justin Tremmel one assist.
