Best overall entry – Dan Barnec of Botha

The parade for the Big Valley homecoming 2009 was a great success. The creativity and effort of individuals, families, community groups and businesses made it possible. The parade was led by the R.C.M.P. and county constable, followed by flags carried by the Rodeo Club. M.L.A. Jack Hayden was driven in a vintage Canadian built Grey Dort. The best overall entry was a hand built covered wagon driven by Dan Barnec with rider Lenard Watson, who together have more than a 150 years experience with horses. The parade stretched from south of the school nearly 1 km to main street. Ribbons were awarded by Judges who came from Drumheller, Sherwood Park, and Whitehorse. 150 participant ribbons were awarded.

Around 600 people registered in the hall. Saturday’s lunch and supper served around 450 people, with a good turnout at the tent each morning for breakfast. It was a busy weekend and all the volunteers as well as the homecoming committee and anybody who was involved in preparing for the homecoming deserve a great big thanks for all the work they did. It takes many hours and months of preparation to get ready for it.

Don’t forget the Summer Reading Club at the library Wednesday mornings from 10am-11:30 a.m. Fridays are Kids only Computer Club, have your parents sign a computer use permission form from the library. The club runs from 12-3:30 every Friday until Aug 14th. There are still cookbooks available in businesses around town.

Congratulations to the Big Red Wings for winning the Big Valley Slow Pitch League title for the second year in a row. On the B side it was Bunkey’s Monkeys who defeated the Screaming Wombats.

The Klaus Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Saturday Aug 8th, the weather was perfect with a good turnout. 1st place went to Russel Evans, Brodie Evans, Kelly Evans, and Marilee Colp. There was a steak dinner and prizes were awarded after. Thanks to Larry & Kathy for putting on this tournament every year.
