An Erskine woman plans to take a 202-kilometre trip on her bicycle this month to raise funds to support patients at Stettler Hospital and Care Centre.
Nancy Bauman is gearing up to pedal for three days — June 15-17— to Longview from Fernie, B.C., in an effort to raise $15,108 for a new bed for terminally-ill patients and provide comfort for families.
She’s making the journey in special memory of her late father, Vern Raho.
“If people can go through pain and suffering, then I can put myself through this challenge to help others,” said Bauman, whose father died of cancer last year at the age of 72.
“We appreciate all those who support this project.”
Nancy’s Ride for palliative care has raised about $5,000 since the project was launched in mid-May under the Stettler Health Services Foundation, which continues to welcome donations.
Family and friends are also collecting pledges and donations can also be submitted at ATCO Electric.
“After I saw what Dad went through, I now want to help others with a comfortable bed and help families with their loved ones in the final days,” Bauman said.
“This bed will be for young and old patients for their comfort and peace of mind.”
Her route is sentimental to the family.
“We’ve been camping in Fernie, which is a lovely place,” Bauman said. “I love the Foothills and Highway 22 is the Cowboy Trail and Dad was a cowboy.”
Family and friends plan to ride along with her for short distances, while close friend Val Mappin is set to ride a full day of about 67 kilometres, she said.
To support the project, Tracy Volker of Erskine will host a garage sale in Erskine this Friday and Saturday.
