The Drumheller Area Health Foundation would like to invite everyone for an afternoon of art and music at the Drumheller Health Center Recreation Therapy Gardens on Sunday, Aug. 30 from 1-4 p.m. There will be silent auction items and live auction at 3 p.m. featuring local artists. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of a portable ultra sound machine for the emergency room and operating room equipment. On Aug. 21 there will be a community shower held in the Rumsey community hall for Devon Sengaus and his bride-elect Nadene Becker. Festivities begin at 7:30 pm.
Aug. 2, is the date of the 2009 Rumsey garden show. Entries will be accepted Aug. 25 from 7-11 p.m. and on Aug. 26, from 8 - 10:30 a.m. Judging will be from 11:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. on the 26th. The exhibits will be open to the public at 4 p.m. There will be a silent auction in the Agri-plex from 5 - 8 p.m. and the awards will be made at 8 p.m. Supper will be served Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the community hall. There will be a children’s flower arranging competition in the Agri-plex at 7:30 p.m.
If anyone has left pots or pans or cakeplates at the community hall, please get in touch with Linda Helmer and she will get them for you. After the first of October, when the new curling season is about to begin, these articles will be taken to the Salvation Army. Please do an inventory of your kitchen.
The 20th annual ride for STARS was held over the weekend. It was another huge success. Total raised for STARS on Sunday, Aug. 9 at the TL Bar Ranch on the west banks of the Red Deer River near the Tolman bridge crossing was $44,327.16.
This is a breakdown of the figures;
Total pledges for the day was $31,265 gathered from 111 riders. The weather was just perfect for a day of riding and everyone surely did en joy the day.
The breakfast, prepared and served up by the Rumsey Fire Dept. serving more than 222 hungry people brought in $792. The poker rally sold 203 hands and turned in $660 to STARS to add to the total pledges.The pie throw brought in $250. The beautiful quilt, made by the Richmond family, brought in $1518. The huge silent auction brought in $7673.41. The delicious BBQ roast beef supper brought in $2168.75. If you add all these figures together the grand total for the day was $45,328.16. The 20-year total is now at $449,989.84.
Ray Duft and his accordian playing companion were on hand to supply music during the breakfast. Sounded great. Wanda Freeborn and Sarah Hughs from STARS were on site with soveniers .
Awards were given out to the people who raised the highest pledges. Winning highest in the adult class was Rosalie Macfarlane ($7,119) and was awarded the Rumsey Ag. Society belt buckle. Second highest pledges was turned in by Ernie Goddard ($5,375) and he was awarded a beautiful stetson hatt donated by STARS.Shirley Woods was third highest ($3,040)and was awarded the Heavy Metals donation of a horn bag.( we call them pommel bags.)
Honourable mention with high pledges were; Mark Andrews, ($710), Lyan Tanner, ($605), Colin Turigan, (500), Dustin Andrew ($1,860), Bill Reddaway ($500) and Brian Niel ($560). Each of the above mentioned riders received a free commemorative t-shirt. for turning in over $350 in pledges.
The oldest rider was Elmer Turigan receiving the prize from Jacqui Goddard. Aubrayek Bardahl received the youngest rider award from Rosalie and John Macfarlene.
In the juniors, the highest pledges turned in by Mackenzie Anderson ($3,730) (10 yrs old) and received a beautiful belt buckle from Kanyon View Ranch, (Ron and Kathy Upton). Ernie Goddard made a set of pommel bags for second highest pledges in the junior class and Tiernan Lynch ($670) won these. In third place was Austin Prokopishin ($360) winning a picture frame and $50 cash from the Yale Hotel in Trochu.
The poker rally that was held brought money to Lorraine Foesier, 2. Glenda Michie, and Rob Nichols. Winners in the quilt raffle was 1. winning the quilt was Shelley Grover from Stettler, 2. was a $200 gift certicate from Sobey grocery in Stettler and 3. steam train tickets for two, Vicki Leuck also of Stettler.
During the presentations of prizes, Dr Gregg Powell, the man that started STARS made a presention to Ernie Goddard, chairman of the STARS committee, of a beautiful picture of recognition. It will hang on the special wall of STARS in the Rumsey community hall. Another plaque was reeceived of all the signatures of the people at STARS.
Dr. Gregg and his wife Linda rode out from the city in the large Simmulator Training Bus and it was on site for a couple of hours for everyone to inspect and have a guided tour by the EMT and driver.
The delicious barbecue roast beef supper brought in over $2,000 so at $10 per plate, there were over 200 people for supper.
The STARS committee of the Rumsey Ag. Society are most grateful for all the support that has been shown over this period of time of preparing and having the 20th annual ride for STARS.
Congratulations to Al Gerung on his becoming a grandpa. Heidi and Craig ad there 8 lb baby boy on Monday, Aug. 10.
There was a small toy helicopter left at the STARS table on Sunday and if the little boy who left it there could get in touch with me as I have it at my house.
