An eventful and soggy ball tournament

What a soggy weekend. The ball tournament almost got cancelled but everyone agreed that Albertans are a hardy lot.

RUMSEY RECORD -- What a soggy weekend. The ball tournament almost got cancelled but everyone agreed that Albertans are a hardy lot and used to all kinds of weather, so why not take a chance?

It turned out be a real mixed bag of weather. The ag society worked really hard on Friday to pump the water off the diamonds and rake and dry the shale as much as possible before the first games started that evening. On Saturday, the weather really cheered up with the sun coming out and getting quite hot and muggy by mid-afternoon. On the schedule, there were to be two games at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning but the four teams decided to get those games out of the way in the evening since the weather was cooperating.

Drew Tolman took one on the chin for his team as he was pitching as a line drive headed back to the mound at such speed that he had no time to put up any defense and it hit him just off center of his chin, dislocating his jaw. He headed off to Three Hills emergency to get that set back into place while the teams decided that they had enough for the night and called the game. Drew was back later that evening to reassure everyone that we hadn’t heard the last from him, thank goodness. Sunday games played out well until the finals started when the skies opened up and dumped another inch of rain onto the diamonds concluding the tournament for this year. The teams that were headed to the play-offs agreed to split the wins as the option to play was going to be impossible.

The A finalists were Nuke and the A Bombs Dustin Sengaus’s team from Rumsey against Swingers and Dingers Dylan Houstan’s team from Big Valley. The B Finalists were Yank Deez Dallas Morgan’s team from Trochu vs Tittsberg Feelers Jackie Watt’s team from Rumsey. The C Finalists were Raxx and Saxx Owen VanDorn’s team from Three Hills vs Pretty Well Dickered Cass Mappin’s team from Big Valley. I know everyone who attended would like to send out a big thank you to the organizers, Drew Tolman and Derek Krywcun for all the work they put in prior to and during the weekend.

Also, I know there were a few grateful campers who appreciated Derek’s generosity when he drove his tractor into town to help drag them up onto dry land so they could get going home to clean up. The rest of the ag society crew needs a big round of applause for the cleaning up throughout the weekend.

I would like to send out another big thank you to the shy guy who keeps our corner sign looking so nice. Sean Penner has done an amazing job at keeping the corner neat, bright and visible along with some beautiful flowers to draw your eye as you arrive at our little village. He was worried that he was better off keeping a low profile so he didn’t cause any trouble but I assured him that everyone was curious and pleased with his work so would really like to see it continue.

Lastly, the STARS Ride is quickly approaching, so if you would like to get a pledge sheet and sign up for the ride, please contact Joann Richmond, Rob Richmond, Ernie Goddard for more information. It will be held on Sunday, August 7.

Canadian summer

I asked my Canadian friend “Did you have a good Summer?

He replied “Yes indeed, we had a great picnic that afternoon!”

Miniature golf

It was at a miniature golf course on a brutally hot day when I saw a father with three kids.

“Who’s winning?” I asked cheerfully.

“I am” said one “no, I am” said another.

“No,” the father said “their mother is!”

Have a great week.
