A surprise visit to Elks

The Elks Annual Oyster Feed and Past Exalted Ruler Night was a huge success. As a pleasant surprise to the evening, the Grand Exalted Ruler, Duane Romuld, who was in the area to open the Elks Curling in Red Deer, arrived to join in the festivities.

He was very impressed with the outstanding initiation ceremony and gave an excellent speech on Elkdom in general. It was evident to all why this individual attained the leadership role and he received a standing ovation for his presentation and all the work he has done on behalf of the Elks.

This year was marked by brothers from other districts attending this event. Lodges represented were Hanna, Delia, Drumheller, Three Hills, Trochu, Delburne, Trenville, Stettler, Coronation and Castor. Seven new brothers were initiated and welcomed into this worthy fraternity. Hanna’s patrol team, with district deputy Archie Williams at the helm, led the initiates through the process. Brother Lloyd Duncan again led our excellent degree team in the ceremony.

The meeting was followed by a meal of oysters and all the trimmings prepared by Bill and a fine crew of younger members.

A disbursement was made to the Big Valley PTA to assist in transportation costs for the school children attending swimming classes in Stettler. Upcoming events include Delburne’s 80th anniversary on April 12, a walk-a-thon in Castor on May 3, and inter-lodge golf in Hanna on Saturday, May 29 at 2 p.m.

The club attendance draw was won by Brian Mose. This 50-50 draw saw a tidy sum going to the Elks and Royal Purple Children’s Charity. The last 200 club draw of the year took place and the new books are now on sale, so get your tickets. Call Lloyd Duncan, Lorne Parkin, Bill Smillie or any member of the Elks. Winners of the $50 are Nicole Houston, Lorne Parkin and Anne Donahue. The grand prize $500.00 winner was Mike Moss from Lacombe. Trevor didn’t win again for the umpteenth time, but he did sell the winning ticket. Many thanks to everyone who supports the Elks by purchasing tickets.

Only 10 players were out for crib at the Big Valley Inn on March 28. At Table One, 1st was Len Shaw, 2nd Ernie Petrussa and 3rd Violet McCarty with the booby going to Joanne Murphy.
