A Look Back -Grain fields have never looked so beautiful around Stettler

2000 – 10 YEARS AGO

• Incumbent MLA Judy Gordon will represent the Progressive Conservative party in Lacombe-Stettler in the next provincial election after she defeated strong Stettler-area municipal leader and County of Stettler councilor Jack Hayden on June 15 in Alix.

• Hundreds of students planted hundreds of trees in Stettler Rotary Club’s new Millennium Tree Park in the Grandview area of the Town of Stettler which will have a total of 1,000 trees planted.

1990 – 20 YEARS AGO

• The Canadian Northern Society announced that the official rededication of the newly refurbished railway station at Big Valley will take place on July 29. The station and roundhouse will be open tor people to view.

• Two local chuckwagon drivers are in the top-20 list released by the World Professional Chuckwagon Association. Darren Anderson of Halkirk with his Stettler Hotel rig shares a 13th place tie and Neal Walgenbach, sponsored by Dean’s Oilfield Service holds that 17th spot.

1980 – 30 YEARS AGO

• Stettler Baptist Church with 300 people led by pastor George Warkentin, made a triumphant entry into their new church facility in Grandview subdivision for a highly-spirited dedication service on June 15.

• James Pfeifer of Stettler is presently on tour with the Camrose Lutheran College concert choir and brass quartet as they left June 3 for a 24-day tour of Scandinavia, Germany and France.

1970 – 40 YEARS AGO

• The most exciting three days in Stettler – Stettler Stampede and Homestead Days – are almost here and there is an expectant stir in the community. Highlight of the weekend promises to be the Wilf Carter Show on Saturday night.

• Barec Bros. of Botha did well with its entries in the Lacombe Polled Hereford Show and Sale as this group showed the reserve champion bull and the grand champion female.

1960 – 50 YEARS AGO

• Wilf Carter, popular music recording star and actor will appear at Stettler Community Centre under the auspices of Stettler Legion. Carter’s daughters Sheila and Carol will accompany him with several others in an all-star cast.

• Stettler Elks’ seventh annual five-car Bingo held at the drive-in theatre raised over $4,000 as 3,200 people played.

1950 – 60 YEARS AGO

• The annual Elks’ Kiddies’ Picnic held at Ideal Valley attracted many people as children were given ice cream and soft drinks and the merry-go-round was full all day with children have fun with free rides.

• Stettler All-Stars reached the semi finals in the Lacombe (men’s baseball?) tournament and will get prize money for third or fourth place, depending on the outcome of the final game. The team defeated Indian Head Rockets and a Red Deer team.

1940 – 70 YEARS AGO

• Judge Grey is our oldest (longest-serving) active businessman. He opened the Dominion Land Office in 1905 served as police magistrate for 35 years and is still engaged in active service at the courthouse.

• Four dogs died from poisoning in Stettler. In two cases, children were laying with the dogs when the poison was obtained and if the dogs had bitten, death could have been the result.

1930 – 80 YEARS AGO

• The public is cordially invited to attend the Stettler Horticultural Society Peony Show at Sharpe and Page’s. The peony has been selected as the flower for the Town of Stettler and every home should have a few of these flowers.

• Small boy to father – “The world in round, isn’t it? Then if I wanted to go east, I could get there by going west, couldn’t’ I?” The dad replied – “Yes, and when you grow up, will be a taxi cab driver.”

1920 – 90 YEARS AGO

• Never have the fields of grain looked so beautiful and promising as they do at the present time. Plenty of rain and sunshine has done wonders and the Stettler area is a favoured locality.

• Departmental examinations for grades 4 to 7 will take place in Stettler School all next week. It is expected that 100 students from local and rural schools will write these exams.

1910 – 100 YEARS AGO

•An immense picnic will be held at Whittiker’s Grove on Willow Creek on June 30. Foot races, horse races, and a baseball game in the afternoon are scheduled with a bowery dance in the evening.

• A motor stage service has been established between Stettler and Morrin as the car leaves Morrin at 7 a.m . Tuesdays and Fridays and leaves Stettler at 2 p.m. on the same days.
