A big invitation to all Big Valley kids

The annual Elks Elmer Kerbes Memorial Golf Tournament held on Sunday, June 13 was a grand success. 42 golfers hit the links and when the dust settled, Mike Fahey’s team, consisting of Cliff Ross, Myra Grieg, Bev Butterfield and Skelton (Don Hennel’s grandson) prevailed in a three-team chip off. Bev showed us all how it was done! Congratulations to the Draw Master and MC, Len Currie, who made up the teams. The Elks would like to thank the Kerbes family for their outstanding support. Breakfast, lunch, golf, camaraderie, great times and remembering Elmer; nothing can beat that good old Big Valley spirit. A big pat on the back to all the organizers and everyone who made this event so special.

The Big Valley Municipal Library and the Village of Big Valley are sponsoring an end of the school year/welcome to summer “Fun in the Park” morning on June 29. All kids are invited to Big Valley’s Memorial Park from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. for crafts, a treasure hunt, group games, relay races, prizes and tons of summer fun. Enter the “CRAZY for SUMMER” contest by wearing a “crazy” outfit to the event. Lunch will be served at noon. Don’t forget your sunscreen and running shoes.

After a cold and soggy spring, back to normal temperatures and sunny skies greeted us here in Big Valley for Father’s Day and the official start of summer. Unfortunately, as we basked in the sunshine of a beautiful Alberta summer weekend, our neighbours in the normally semi-arid south were inundated with rain and flood waters that have ruined homes and washed out roads and railway tracks. Though often confronted with pictures in the news of natural disasters that occur somewhere in the world, the images of the major sink hole that has cut off travel on the TransCanada Highway and so many homes filled with mud and contaminated water seem much more vivid because they are happening so close to home.
