Stettler Wildcats had a great game against Ponoka as they brought them down 47-0 on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Steele Nichols and Brett Mercier scored two TDs each, while Noah McKay, Kam Bainbridge, and Gavin McQuay scored a TD each.

With many of the players having graduated last year, Wildcats are still finding their groove still, and are looking for more players to join the program.

“We are still low on the number of players and would love to pick up a few before the end of September if possible,” said Head Coach Norbert Baharally. “We really need to focus on the number of penalties that we are taking during our games and learn how to play as a focused and disciplined team.”

The penalties that Wildcats have taken so far in the season have “stooped” some of their most crucial drives and have also prolonged the opponent drives at critical times in the games, according to Baharally.

“In preparation for our next game against Wetaskiwin, we will be doing a lot of the same that we normally would do, starting with a light workout with no hitting and watching film from our last game as well as Wetaskiwin film,” Baharally added. “We will also be doing some fundamental tackling drills – safe contact – as well as full contact blocking and tackling on Wednesday, and on Thursday we will be going through our pre-game routine – all special teams review, offence, and defence.”

Baharally explained that his coaching staff was trying to get the players in better condition.

“Because of our limited number of players and the amount of time that they will need to be on the field during a game, we need to work on their form,” Baharally stated. “We’re also trying to coach and teach our guys to be able to play two positions – one on offence and one on defence.”

Wildcats will take on Wetaskiwin on Friday, Sept. 29 at 4:30 p.m. at the Wm. E. Hay football field.
