The under-12 Stettler Crush provincial team won the gold medal at a girls’ softball tournament in Innisfail last weekend.

The provincial team is a combination of Stettler’s two under-12 teams. The Crush go to the provincials in Sedgewick in early July.

The team consists of 12 players, but one of those won’t likely be available for the provincial championship.  Elli Anderson broke her wrist at Grade 5 camp last week. She had just returned to the lineup from a severely sprained ankle. Elli helps to keep the bench energetic and entertained.

On the field, Stettler defeated Elkford — a travelling team from Fernie, B.C. — 10-9 in Sunday’s final.

The Crush had a slow start on the bats, with the score tied 1-1 after two innings. Finally, Stettler was able to get some momentum going in the third inning.

In the final inning, Stettler had runners on second and third bases when Kayla Myshaniuk hit a pop fly just past the pitcher. Elkford was unable to make the catch, letting Myshaniuk safely get on base.

And with some aggressive base-running, Jaiden Stotz and Tamara Ball were both able to steal home to end the game.

Stettler opened the tournament last Friday night against host Innisfail, and won 12-11 after a long seven innings. Gracie Morbeck scored back-to-back home runs, while Stotz added two homers and Taylor Northrop had one.

On Saturday morning, Stettler beat Sedgewick 14-11. Gracie Morbeck picked up two home runs.

Saturday afternoon, the Crush faced Delburne — a team Stettler sees in league play. The Crush dominated the game, winning 18-6, with all 11 players in the lineup batting very well.

Sunday morning, in its final round-robin game, Stettler clubbed Olds 25-6. Gracie Morbeck scored a home run in that game.
