REDFERN - Pauline Ann Redfern (Pauli) of Stettler, AB passed away peacefully on Sept. 12, 2008, at the age of 93. Left to mourn her loss and to remember her lovingly are her son Paul Redfern of Stettler, daughters Lynn Redfern (Pinnell) and Laurel Redfern of Edmonton, AB and daughter-in-law Shelley Redfern of Lacombe, AB. She also leaves five very special grandchildren, Susan and Julia Redfern of Lacombe and

Eric, Ian and Mark Pinnell of Edmonton, her much-loved great-grandson, Austin Pinnell of Edmonton, sisters-in-law Katy Steinley of Calgary, AB and Margaret Thomas of Vancouver, B.C. as well as numerous nieces, nephews. Pauli was predeceased by her husband Ben in 1992 and her son Jim in 2002, as well as her parents, Fred and Charlotte Steinley, brothers Ed, Vic and Fred, and sisters Lydia, Olga, Edith, Tilly and Alvina. Pauli was born in Winnipeg, MB the daughter of German-Russian immigrants who came to Canada in 1912 from the Volga region of Russia. Their rich rural heritage and work ethic shaped her early years growing up on the family farm in southern Saskatchewan, as well as her tenacity in completing high school in Regina, SK while working to pay for room and board. She survived the Great Depression working in Calgary, and married her husband Ben there during the second world war. After moving to Stettler in 1946, Pauli became known to many in the area as an outstanding mother, homemaker, baker, dressmaker, gardener, friend, advisor, and political activist. She spent many years as an active member of the New Democratic Party, and in 1983 was recognized by Grant Notley and Tommy Douglas with a Lifetime Membership Award. Pauli was also a staunch supporter of social causes such as Medicare and Peace Movement. Even in her later years, Pauli kept well-informed about political and social issues and was always willing to share her opinions on these with others. She was greatly admired and will be sincerely missed by her family and friends. A memorial service will be held at the St. George Anglican Church, Stettler, on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Jack Schulze officiating.As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made in Pauli’s name to Project Ploughshares, Friends of Medicare or to a charity of one’s choice in care of Brennen Funeral Home (2001) Ltd., P.O.
