Marie Louisa

Marie Louisa Bignell (nee Gosling), of Red Deer, AB, passed away peacefully at on July 1, 2017 in Red Deer at the age of 92.

Marie was born in Gem, Alberta on October 5, 1924 to Sidney and Ann Gosling. Marie attended school in Lathom and graduated from Bassano High School. After graduation she moved to Stettler and was employed with the Royal Bank in Stettler.

Marie met Ken Bignell at a dance in Stettler and they were married on November 4, 1946. Marie and Ken bought the family farm northeast of Stettler from his parents and resided there until Ken's passing in 1981. Marie and Ken were very active in the Stettler Light Horse Club and enjoyed the times spent with friends on trail rides, riding in the Stettler parade and a particular favorite, the musical ride. The wrap up to these lazy days of summer was always back at the camper with coffee and home baked goodies. Boss Hill at Buffalo Lake was always a favorite ride. She also enjoyed being a member of the Pilot Knob Ladies Club for a number of years. The ladies were always busy organizing pot luck suppers, card parties and catering for banquets at the Memorial Centre.

Following Ken's passing, Marie moved to Stettler working in Fields Store until her retirement. Family was very important to Marie and she especially loved being a grandmother and great grandmother. Her four grandchildren have many fond memories of staying with her in the summers as they were growing up.

We wish that so much of her life had not been lost to her illness, that things could have been different for her, and for us. While we know that she is at peace and that her struggles are at an end, there is pain and sadness. Alzheimer's is truly the long slow goodbye. But even though she is gone, the ways she touched our lives will remain, and we ask you to keep those memories alive by sharing them with one another.

Marie is survived by her loving family: children: Terry (Lynda) Bignell and Lorna (Mac) Tweten; grandchildren Trevor (Susan) Bignell, Brett (Kelly) Bignell, Lisa Tweten and Kelly Tweten; great grandchildren Kristi, Jordan, Matthew and Kate Bignell; brother: Albert Gosling (Carole Christensen); sister-in-law Frances Bignell; numerous other nieces, nephews other relatives and many dear friends.

There was a Graveside Service for the late Mrs. Marie Bignell at the Lake View Cemetery, Stettler on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. Following the service family and friends gathered at in the fellowship centre of the Stettler Funeral Home for a time of sharing memories and a luncheon prepared by Teresa's Catering.
