SCHEERSCHMIDT – On April 25, 2008 Kasper Bernard “Bruno” Scheerschmidt passed away quietly at Stettler Heritage House Extended Care Facility with his brother Edgar and sister-in-law Pauline at his side. Bernard was the eldest child and first son born to Bernhardt and Luise (Wienelt) Scheerschmidt at the Mills Hospital in Stettler, AB on Oct. 19, 1927. He spent most of his life in the Lone Pine Lake area and attended Kindergarten School and then Stettler High School. Upon completion of Grade 12 he spent a few winters working in lumber camps and started farming with his father. In 1949 he took over the management of the farm and leased additional land. He supplemented his income by working in construction with a neighbour, Gus Viger. When Gus retired, Bernard continued working with his cousins, Gerald Viger and Alfred Stauffer. After he had acquired more leased land he joined in a mixed beef and cattle operation with his brother Edgar. Later they formed Lone Pine Lake Herefords, and Bernard took great pride in developing and marketing quality Horned Hereford livestock. At the time of his retirement he moved to Stettler and built his dream home. After a brief marriage, he moved into Willow Creek Lodge and was subsequently admitted to Heritage House upon the deterioration of his health. In his younger years he played baseball with the Lone Pine Lake senior men’s team. He also enjoyed curling, hunting and playing cards. Bernard was an active member of the Lone Pine Lake Community Centre and served five terms as a councillor for the County of Stettler. Bernard believed in honesty and integrity, always had an inquiring mind and an excellent memory. He was an avid reader and his special interests were science, history, sports and politics. He also enjoyed travel until his deteriorating health prevented him from setting out on any further adventures. Bernard placed great value on family and friendship and will be sadly missed by his siblings, their families and his community. He is survived by three sisters and two brothers: Emily of Sherwood Park, AB, Christa (Don) McLeod and children Catherine (Tom) McLeod-Seltzer and their son Graham, Bruce (Julia) McLeod and their son Caelan, Helen (Franklin) Finlay and children, Greg (Vivian) Finlay and their son Tanner, Kim Finlay, Bess (Gary) Shepherd and their daughter Amanda (Tim Omilusik) Shepherd and daughter Deanna, Edgar (Pauline) Scheerschmidt and their children, Lois (Leighton Blashko) Scheerschmidt and their son Reid, Brad Scheerschmidt and his children, son Jaden and daughter Sydney, Ray (Louise) Scheerschmidt and their children, John (Jodi Potter) Scheerschmidt and his sons, Jason, Zachary, and Dalton, and Chuck (Sheila) Scheerschmidt and their daughters, Ally and Mackenzie.
