STRANDQUIST - Doris Bernice (nee Lohrmann) was born Dec. 3, 1930 in Hanna, AB and left us Nov. 28, 2008 at the Stettler Hospital. Her 78 years were filled with family, adventure and so much more. Doris grew up in the Scapa area where she was active in baseball and attended the community dances. She spoke fondly of the school’s play productions as they travelled the area, including Castor, AB and Hanna. She graduated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Commercial School in Red Deer, AB in 1951. After careers with the Red Deer RCMP and a doctor’s office, she worked at the Hanna Bank. She met Orville at a local rodeo dance. She went to the bank the next day and said she had met the man she was going to marry. She was right and April 1, 1956 Scapa saw the wedding. She was welcomed by Orville’s three children: Faye, Judi and Ronnie. They lived in the Hanna/Scapa area for a few years before moving to the Strandquist farm near Stettler, AB. Wanda was the first to be born followed by Cindy, Rocky and Vicky. The following years saw Doris, her children and assorted others trailing Orville and the horses in the summer months. Little did she know that her childhood winters spent sewing, glass painting, knitting and crocheting would prove to be invaluable when painting wagons and canvas and sewing outriding shirts. They later sold the farm and bought one south of Erskine. It was there the grandchildren would come to play as Doris and Orville grew older and decided to give up the chucks. In 2004 Orville moved to the nursing home after a stroke. Doris would move to Paragon Place after selling the farm. Doris is survived by her husband Orville Strandquist of Stettler; daughters: Faye (Chuck) Blakely of Stettler, Judi Melville of Calgary, AB, Wanda Strandquist (Randy Armstrong) of Elnora, AB, Cindy (John) Parks of Erskine, AB, Vicky (Darren) Anderson of Halkirk, AB; sons: Ronnie (Susan) Strandquist of Fairview, AB and Rocky Strandquist of Stettler; 13 grandchildren: Shawn, Tony (Jackie), Carmen (Brian), Billy (Joanne), Eddie, Wade (Shauna), Monica, Lisa, Rory, John, Levi, Lacey and J.D.; six great grandchildren; brother Lou Lohrmann (Rhea) of Hanna; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Predeceased by her parents Charlie and Christina (Liecht) Lohrmann; sisters and brothers-in-law: Hazel (Bill) Chidley, Marie “Tiny” (Gordon) Melary and son-in-law Ed Melville. Funeral service was held at Stettler Funeral Home on Dec. 3, 2008 with Rev. David Denholm of the Stettler United Church officiating. Ronnie Strandquist, Judi Melville and Lana Rennick gave loving tributes to those in attendance. Honorary Pallbearers were Frank and Eleanor Dahlgren, Ann and Glen Swainston, Max McMillan, Allen McMillan, Irene McMillan, Verna Mailer and Robin Cosgrave. Interment will take place at a later date. Family and friends gathered for a time of fellowship and refreshments supplied by Brenda’s Country Catering.
