Another beautiful weekend in Rumsey with the weather keeping the roads clear and for those in the community who are starting their early calving, no frozen ears.

The 2nd Annual Coyote Derby was a success with 10 teams entered. We enjoyed a good supper after the hunt at the Rumsey Drop-In with close to 30 people in attendance to find out who is the best hunters in the derby. Dale Skocdopole and Shane Pollitt came away the winners with five dogs brought down. Darrell Primrose and Carla Johnson brought in two for 2nd place. Mike Steen and Carver Johnson tied with Ryan Hallett and Shannon Copps bringing in one coyote each. Everyone agreed that it was a beautiful day for hunting. Thanks again to Peavey Mart, ID Apparel, OK Tire, No Frills for their donations towards the supper and prizes.

A big thank you to Don Saar who came again to judge the contest and also made a big donation towards the Drop-In. This event will help to keep the doors open for another year so thank you to everyone who contributed and participated in a fun day. Remember if you are interested in renting the Drop-In, it is a nice, small venue with all the amenities of a larger hall but we only charge $50 a day with seating up to 45 people, handicap accessible, kitchen, pool table and shuffle board in the basement for entertainment.

The Men’s Bonspiel will be in full swing by the time you read this column so don’t forget to take part in Oyster Night this Thursday at the rink. The banquet is also open to everyone, not just the curlers, so come and enjoy a good meal and a good visit while you watch some exciting curling. The next bonspiel will be the Ladies on February 7 to 10; call Brooks and Jackie Watts at 403-368-2357 to enter a team.

The Birthday Club had their January’s celebration at St. Mary’s Lodge on January 15 with Judy Stoneman serving the birthday cake for the lodge members. There was only one birthday this month; Frank Smyth from Extended Care. Next month, the birthday club will take place on Tuesday, February 20 because of Family day holiday being on the traditional 3rd Monday of the month. Jean Richmond will be the hostess.

Enjoy a giggle and have a great week:

A man wakes up one morning to find a bear on his roof. So he looks in the yellow pages and sure enough, there’s an ad for “Bear Removers.”

He calls the number, and the bear remover says he’ll be over in 30 minutes. The bear remover arrives, and gets out of his van. He’s got a ladder, a baseball bat, a shotgun and a mean old pit bull.

“What are you going to do,” the homeowner asks?

“I’m going to put this ladder up against the roof, then I’m going to go up there and knock the bear off the roof with this baseball bat. When the bear falls off, the pit bull is trained to grab his testicles and not let go. The bear will then be subdued enough for me to put him in the cage in the back of the van.”

He hands the shotgun to the homeowner.

“What’s the shotgun for?” asks the homeowner.

“If the bear knocks me off the roof, shoot the dog!”
